THE RACING WORLD

AVONDALE MEETING

HAWKE’S BAY ACCEPTANCES

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Acceptances for the first day’s events of the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting will close on Friday at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the Marlborogh Racing Club’s autumn meeting will close on Friday

Owing to Idle railway strike the Reefton Jockey Club decided to hold its meeting on Wednesday on the Greymouth course (says a Press Association telegram).

Prior to the racing at Trentham on Saturday the two-year-old Battle Eve colt Star Shell was purchased by Mr. 11. P. F. Blundell and ran in his interests in the Hood Handicap. Sir Rosebery has been sold by R. Knox to another Opaki trainer, M . Garrett, and ran in his new colours on Saturday in the Sailors’ Steeplechase.

Carawock and Peach Brandy ■were booked to leave for Sydney on Friday, but tin former will not make the trip unless a suitable rider can be procured. At the time of writing the departure of both horses is rathei uncertain.

Carawock jumped well on Saturday, and it is a pity that in his first venture over the fences he should have run off. particularly at the stand double. as he may be inclined to do it again. The Boniform —Northern Rose colt, full brother to Alabama, which Messrs. Dwan brothers sent over to Sydney for the Easter sales, was sold by Messrs. Chisholm and Co. for soogns. Entre Neus has been confined to sprinting, but in all her races she gave indications that she would stay on and at Trantham on Saturday she finished better than anything over seyen furlongs. It is not her owner s intention to do much racing with her durinrr the winter, and next spring she should be found winning over longer courses.

Solfanello. Ares, Vindictive and Lake Urn arrived from Auckland bv boat yesterday and were ridden out to Trentham. ■> There was something radically wrong with Merry Day’s form at TrenthamShe had not had a gallop since Tatiherenikau, and she may have been m need of a little more fast work on the track.

The fleet meeting caught the connections of Star Ranger unawares, as he had been in the paddock three weeks, and there was not time to give him the necessary work to enable him to see out the mile on Saturday. Being taken up with thto leaders in tho early stages of the race did not assist'him. Star Ranger looks as if he wants time, and he may come good next season.

Rational lost some easy money through not being able to keep his engagement in the Adelaide Handicap on Saturday.

Stan Reid, the ex;New Zealand horseman who now trains at Caulfield and rides his horses over fences, received severe laceration to his nose and an injury to his right knee when Chrysostom fell in the steeplechase at Randwick on Easter Monday. Sydney papers report that he was taken to hospital although not in a serious condition. so it is hardly likely that he was able to ride Chrysostom when he won on Saturday. After the race for the Autumn Stakes on the first day of the recent A.J.C. meeting it was only natural that Ballymena’s defeat of Rapine, over two miles, in the Trentham Gold Cup, should be discussed. The general opinion seemed to be (writes “Cardigan”) that if Rapine was beaten on his merits, as appears to have been the case, then Ballymena’s owner is in for a good time in the weight-for-age races when he comes to Randwick in the spring.

J. McComb® expects to leave for Sydney next month. He will take Sunny Loch, Tho Cheat, and Geranial, and possibly the Paper Money—Subterfuge yearling who has been named Forgery.' An endeavour will probably be made by McCombo to dispose of some of or all the horses. The coming two-year-old gelding by the defunct King John—Tressida has been christened Runnymede. He is tho property of Mr. J. S. McLeod, of Hastings. The two-year-old colt Ophir, by Solferino—Adonr, has been purchased from Mr. G. D. Greenwood by Sir Charles Campbell and has gone into R. Emerson’s stable. Ophir showed promising form at tho Canterbury Jockey Chib’s meeting. Kenmore’s feet have been causing F. Christmas somo trouble lately. Tin's was the reason why the Nassau gelding had to forfeit his engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. A sale of thoroughbreds was held at Ellerslie last week on behalf of Messrs. Paterson Bros, at their Oranga estate. There was a fair attendance, but bidding was very slow and only two lots were disposed of, a chestnut yearling filly by Thurnham—Juanna being purchased for 10 guineas by Mr. W. K. Cave, and the chestnut mare Cadence, by Cyrenian—Lute, served by Romeo, being bought by Mr. A. Miller, Hamilton, for 20 guineas. Uralla and Pelham were passed at 200 guineas and 300 guineas respectively. Two lots were offered on account of Dr. W. Ring, a chestnut filly rising two years, Ivy Day Comet —Miss Alodest, and a chestnut gelding, 5 years, by Potoa —Freedom mare, but both failed to reach the reserve. "A number of other horses were also offered on account of various owners, including Nocturne, but none of them was disposed of.

On Easter Saturday Rapine opened his victorious career at Randwick by winning tho Autumn Stakes at weight-for-age, one mile and a half. He sub sequently was successful in two othei important w.f.a. races at the meeting He sv.arted a hot favourite in each race, but on the first day Sydney files to hand indicate that ho did not have tho best, of runs, being awkwardly placed on the rails most of tho way, and his rider had to wait until the last furlong before he could get out. This procedure is a very favourite move of R, Reed, who never covers an unnecessary inch of ground, and it may bo unusual to Sydney observers, although Reed has ridden several races tliere. Commenting upon the race, “Cardigan” states that until a hundred vards from home it was anybody’s race. Needless to say, Rapine was well received on returning to scale, and he is worthy of any applause, as he is a game customer to overcome the difficulties.

A Press Association message from Hastings states that no alteration in the (late of holding the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting will be made on account of the strike, it being found that postponement would conflict with other race meeting dates.

COMMENT ON RAPINE’S

Sydney, April 28. Commenting on Rapine’s win the “Svdney Morning Herald” says: Rapine’s third decisive weight-for-age win stamps him as one of the best stayers seen at Randwick for some time. He is not only a stayer, but his brilliance enables him to come along at any stage and smother his opponents.’ Rapine has won £5184 in stakes at the Randwick meeting.—Press Assn.

GREENWOOD’S LETTER TO STEWARDS Mr G. D. Greenwood, the owner of " Gloaming, who suffered defeat by Razzle Di'zzle at Riocarton in the Challenge Stakes on Tuesday owing to losing six lengths at the start, has addressed the following letter to the C.J.C. stewards : — “Gentlemen, —So unusual a start in a three-horse race as that made in the Challenge Stakes to-day called tor some inquiry from my jockey, G. Young. I enclose his statement as taken down this evening. There was no time to question him at weiglung-in time, as he was wanted for the next race. Of course, no doubt there are two sides to every question, and possibly you may feel enough interest to see what is the starter's e: planation of so bad a start of only three horses as to leave a horse like Gloaming, who is one of the smartest horses off the mark in the colony. Young’s explanation seems to me to be exactly what I saw through a pair of good glasses. To be able to leave Gloaming six lengths at the start in a three-horse race with a jockey of Young’s experience, before to-day, 1 should have said was impossible. But, if correct, his explanation throws quite a new light on Gloaming’s defeat. The start cost him the race, and though beaten, he ran a wonderful race, and probably cut a second off the Australasian record. A fair, even start, which all horses are entitled to expect, would have given Gleaming an easy victory.” Tho following is the statement by G. Young, given in the evening after the running of the Challenge Stakes: “I drew No. 2 at the barrier. We were lined up, Gaillard No. 1, Gloaming No. 2, Razzle Dazzle No. 3. Gaillard sidled into Gloaming and pushed myself and Waddell, the rider of Razzle Dazzle, to the outsfide of the barrier. He did this three times. The starter called Emerson, Gaillard’s rider, to No. 1 position, and Waddell to No. 2, and he ordered me to take outside position, though Gloaming had not been at all fractious and had stood still until Gaillard pushed us over. I protested against being compelled to abandon mv position because Gloaming had behaved so well. On taking Gloamino- to the outside, Waddell came round back of my horse, and before I could get my horse straight, up went the Farrier, and the other horses were some six lengths ahead before I could get him straight.”
