DERANGED MAORI WITH A RIFLE
FARM MANAGER SHOT IN SHOULDER EXCITEMENT NEAR BULLS (BY TELEGHATH.-PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wanganui, April 27. An exciting incident occurred six miles from Bulls to-day. A Maori, who is believed to be deranged, had an altercation with Mr. Ross, manager of a farm belonging to Mr. Robert Russell, of Wanganui. Mr. Ross galloped on horseback from the Maori, who fired three shots from a rille, the third lodging in Mr. Ross’s shoulder. The Wanganui police were informed that the Maori had barricaded himself, and was firing at passers-by. A number of armed police went to the scene, but on their arrival they found that the man had been arrested. The arresting constable was wearing a military overcoat, as was the Maori, who, it is stated, came forward saluted and was taken in charge. Mr. Ross’s injuries are not serious.
