NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.’’) Nominations for all events at the Wa n eUf°ax ciub ’ s winter Entries for the Great Northern Steeples end Hurdles, and Winter Steeples, also a e ~ ’ r ln<i l P a l handicap flat events at the Auckland winter meeting, will close today, at 5 p.m. 11. McSweeney injured his right shoulder when Highway fell in the Steeple chase at Trenthain on Saturday. He expects to be riding again at the Wanganui meeting. Credit for the wins scored by Fool’s ■Paradise and En Route at Trentham on Saturday must be given to Mr. A Quinlivan, who has br-en in charge of the horses owned by .Mr. E. Riddiford since T. Quinlivan went on a month's holiday, after the racing at Awapuni. The Avondale meeting concludes today. The first race starts about 11.20 a.m.

Karamu, who won the Ilobsonville Hurdles at Avondale on Saturday, paid a dividend of over four centuries. As his name suggests, he was .bred by the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. Foaled in 1916, he is by Ilymettus—Outward, by Birkenhead—Outer. by The Officer. Outer is the dam of Haskayne. Karamu belongs to a good family, but his form so far has been moderate.

J. Barry is having a great innings at present. He rode two winners at Tauherenikau, three at Riccarton, and three at Trentham on Saturday. His total is now 37 on the jockeys’ list, four behind McCarten. A. Reed is third with 31. R. D. O’Donnell, who was caught in Auckland with Ares. Solfanello, Vindictive, and Lake Uru by the railway strike, came down to New Plymouth by boat, and motored home in time for the racing at Trentham on Saturday. The horses taken to Ellerslie are coming down by coastal steamer. Glentruin put up a fine performance on Saturday in the All-Aged Stakes at Avondale. The showing of Nigger Minstrel indicates that he has strong claims to be considered the best two-year-old now in training. The success of Rapine at Randwick on Saturday, as the cable indicates, was fully expected. It has been a very successful meeting for Mr. A. B. Williams, and makes up for the bad hick met with at the spring meetings. The time for the two miles and a quarter, while being a Randwick record, is 2lsec. slower than Gasbag’s Australasian record of 3min. 52sec., made at Riccarton in the Canterbury Cun. Chrysostom, winner of the steeplechase at Randwick on Saturday, is New Zealand bred, being by Demosthenes—Golden Ball. He was taken to Australia by Mr. H. Nathan and is trained at Caulfield by Stan. Reid, who also rides him in his races. Mr. J. P. Murphy’s gelding The Harp, who scored a win and a second at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting last week, is now a member of S. Trilford s team. The Harp has not been many weeks in work, which enhances the merits of his recent performances. The two-year-old Gaillard, winner of the Champagne Stakes, is still quartered at Riccarton, where ho will remain until the railway troub-C is over. J. Sullivan’s team, consisting of Ma Boughal. Tanadees and Tutankhamen, will remain at Riccarton until railway transit is available to get them home. They figured among the acceptors for the meeting at Trentham on Saturday, but they had to miss their engagements. . F. Waddell is still at Riccarton with Gold Light and Razz’.e Dazzle, and ho will keep Mr. AV. T. Hazlett’s two mares there in the meantime. Razzle Dazzle was a trifle soro after her two hard races last week, and may not be laced again for some time. Pantier ran disappointingly at I Hiding. as the son of Panmure had been doin'* good work at Awapum. It is Ins owner’s intention to try him over hurdles. and with that object in view was schooled last week and jumped fair.y well. . . _ , . T. Lloyd intended to bring Sunart and Clandlm north on Thursday night, with a view Io racing them at the Meet meeting at Trentham. Sunart was still showing fligns of soreness, however, and as he (lid not look fit to walk from Biccarton to Lyttelton and for the subsequent walk from AVellmgton io 1 rentham. Llovd decided to remain in the south with his two charges until raiway transit becomes available. SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING POSTPONED Br Tm.EonAi'H—Puess Association. Timaru, April 26.
