THE RACING WORLD

AVONDALE AND TRENTHAM MEETINGS ALFORT AND SCION WIN CHIEF RACES RAPINE INVINCIBLE AT RANDWICK The principal race meetings in the Dominion on Saturday were held at Avondale and Trentham. The latter was a complimentary meeting for the entertainment of the officers and men of the visiting squadron. Seriously affected by the railway strike, bad weather further detracted from the success of the gathering, which was otherwise in every way enjoyable. At Avondale the principal handicap was won by Alfort, who has recently just missed several good races. Glentruin won the all-aged stakes and Tactful the open sprint. The sensation of the day was the dividend paid by Karamu in the hurdle race. Locally the big race went to Scion, who showed a glimpse of his best form. Trentham horses won seven races out of the eight. The feature of the concluding day at Randwick was Rapine's A.J.C. Plate, making his third victory at weight for age in as many starts at the meeting.

THE FLEET MEETING MARRED BY RAIN LOCAL HORSES’ GOOD INNINGS (By “The Watcher.”) The special race meeting for the entertainment of the officers and men of the Special Service Squadron was held at Trentham on Saturday. 'The railway strike seriously interfered with the gathering, as several horses were pot eible to reach the course and keep their engagements. As a result, the fields in some races were small. The weather also was unpropitious. It, came on to rain heavily shortly after the third race had been run and there were heavy showers for the remainder of the afternoon. There was nevertheless some good racing. The officers and men, numbering some 550 of all ranks, were taken out to Trentham by train. Some of the public also travelled in this manner, but the fact that a few race trains were running was not very well known, and a number of carriages going out were practically empty. The returning trains were more liberally patronised. The majority of patrons travelled by road and there was nil extremely heavy volume of motor traffic. The returning traffic was extremely congested on the road close to the course, and the line of vehicles, sometimes two deep, stretched for miles. Amongst those present as guests.of the club were: His Excellency the GovernorGeneral (Viscount Jellicoe), Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field and staff, the Bight Hon. AV. F. Massey (Prime Minister), Sir Francis Bell, and members of the Cabinet. They were welcomed by Air. J. B. Harcourt, president of the club, and were entertained at luncheon in the stewards’ room. Complete arrangements were made for catering to the men of the squadron in marquees in the outside enclosure. In spite of the unfavourable weather they all appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves, and many evinced a keen interest in the working of the electric totalisation, besides venturing with the general public in the attempt to back winners. The racing, as was to be expected with so many of the visitors unable to put in an appearance, was a benefit for Trentham stables, the hurdles being the only race that did not go to a locallytrained horse. Horses trained by T. , Quinlivan and J. Ayres won two races. There was nothing in the running to court inquiry with the exception of the bumping in the first race, which resulted in Glimpse and Asleep being interfered with. The conclusion arrived at was that the interference was accidental. The totalisator turnover was very moderate for Trentham. the sum of «£28.(i41 IDs. being put through on the eight races. During the afternoon an enjoyable programme. of music was rendered by the Ist Battalion Wellington Regimental Band. NAVY LEAGUE WELTER. x Musical, Lady Gay, and Kilfaire were withdrawn from the opening event, leaving eleven runners. Entre Nous was favourite, but good support came for Glimpse, Asleep, ttad Spoony. Bright Eyes and Spoony had their chances spoiled at the start, as they lost several lengths. Bright Eyes ran up on the turn, and appeared behind the leaders, but stopped soon afterwards, while Spoony was running on at tlio finish. With a better run he would have made it harder for tho winner. Peach Brandy and Tinohari piloted the field down the back, and running round the turn Tinohari had gone out two or three lengths in tho lead. AL this stage Glimpse, Good Mark, and Asleep were in good post(ions, but Glimpse and Asleep met with interference, and tho bitter s chances were extinguished Nothing was going better than the favourite. AL the top of tho straight Tinohari led from leach Brandy and Good Mark, with Entre Nous ’and Glimpse showing up. Jn the run up the straight Entre Nous stayed on well, and beat Peach Brandy bv half a length. About another length off there was not Hindi between uooa Mark and Glimpse, tho latter getting third money, with Bonny Marion, Spoony and Tinohari dose together. REPULSE HURDLES. The scratchings were Santiago Tenterfield. and Rowan. Anxious Moments was made a good favourite with the bulk of the remainder ot the jxiol on Captain Sarto and MilitiM?. machine accurately indicated the result. The favourite went to the front leaving the straight, up to which point J aiorail"-! had accompanied him, and down the n back had a lead of five or six lengths from Captain Sarto, with Militaire Tho others were jumping indifferently, and were, bar accidents, right out of the '■ontesi. There was no change theicafter right to the judge, Anxious Moments winning easily by eight lengths, with Captain Sarto three lengths in front of Militaire. Parrangt was two lengths further off. The others got wund sate v, but were well back, and finished: Silk Rein Scintillation, and Armona. Pa’? 0 ’ rang had knocked down, the first hurdle, which made it easier for the winner coming homo, but it mndq no difference to the result. Anxious Moments, who is a very fast hurdler, made one bad jump, striking the hurdle going out of the straight, and for a fow paces dragged his hind legs. He made a wonderful recovery Captain Sarto hit tho hur'lle at the' five-furlong post hard in ‘rent, and bumped his rider up on to his neck, but he made a very clever, recovery, and it did not seem to affect his chances. Militaire ran a fair race but. had no chance of conceding the winner a stone. HOOD HANDICAP. The bracketed pair Tanadecs and Tutankhamen, and Lake Uiu w no scratched for the two-year-old race, ami in the field of eight bool s Paradise was backed as a certainty He began weffi and right from the start had matters .all his wwu. way. -deala wont with

He eventually ran home an easy winner by four lengths in tho good time 0f59 4-ssec., and is a greatly-improved horse. There was a good finish for second, Kilmer staying on best and petting the verdict over La Reve by a tang neck, with Star Shell and Pleasant Surprise close up. THE ADMIRAL'S CUP. There was a disappointing field for the chief handicap, scratchings reducing the runners to five. Merry Day was looked upon as unbeatable, carrying over halt tho tickets, but she ran badly and finished fourth. The start was not a good and Printemps caught the tapes in hin'mouth. Aeriform and Atapo w<re the last to move, but they had run to tho front at the end of a furlong. I nntemps, who had apparently been stirred up by getting caught in tho tapes, fighting hard for his head, was in third place, being more than his pilot conk manage. Scion and Merry Day three or four lengths liack. hack no chango all the way down the ba K and round the turn. but. appronclung the straight Scion moved no. lie gradu®* l ? ctased on the leaders, .but Merry D*y could make no impression bail i iad Hi® race won nearly two furlongs n home where he hit the front, and lEI«,S’ off Merry Day beat rrijitemps a j;300 just over two n^. n t 1,! ’ time now a cheap hoise. Vindictive, and were scratched for the hack mile, the field of seven providod B was bottintr race, in which Star Kangei Ehe actual favourite. Asleep made h s second appearance for the day. it w i raintag heavily by the time the race w-is run OtaiiKi made the pace with Star Hanger, All Gold and Eif Rente handy all the runners, in fact, except Stream, who was toiling in last place, having good prospects Otaura cd into the straight, and although he went gamely En Route came along too solidly, and won by a length and a half. Radiac finished well into third place n length behand Otaura. All Gold was fourth, with Star Ranger, who tailed to see it out in tho straight, next. The winner, who has been kept for hurdling, has always shown pace on the flat in training, and ho scored very nicely. Otaura continues to show good form. SAILORS’ STEEPLECHASE. Ranui and Birkonella were not present to keep their engagement in the Steeplechase, which saw six runners, I'irst Line being made a good favourite. It was a bad day for tho inexperienced fencers, as the ground had become very slippery, and onlv the old pair, First Line and Dick, right from the start looked likely to get round without mishap. Carawock, Highway, and Sir Rosebery led io the first fence, the sed wall, where the three of them slipped badly, but got over. Dick and Fiist Line jumped it well, but Sliiig Camp showed a strong dislike to tho change from hurdling. The next fence was safely negotiated, but at the third Highway spilled his rider, and this left Carawock in the lead from Sir Rosebery. Sling Camp refused at the top brush, having jumped only three fences, and at the brush at tho top of the straight, the sixth fence, Carawock had a lead of three or four lengths from Sir Rosebery, who here ran off. This left First Line and Dick several lengths behind Carawock, who ran off at the second of tho stand double. First Line and Dick were now the only two left in the race, and over the. final round they gave a fine exhibition o" clean, safe jumping. Dick rAu three lengths behind until turning into the straight, where fie closer! up. They were practically on terms nt the last fence, but Dick haff the pace on the flat, and he won by three lengths, his win being received with much applause. ADELAIDE HANDICAP. There were only four starters in the o[x>n sprint. Lady Fingers being made a slightly better favourite than Quest. She began well, and at the course proper had ■i lead of some four lengths from Last Crust and Rose of Athens, Quest being last. Lady Fingers was still holding a good lead when well into the straight, but Last Crust finished very strongly and beat her to the line by a short neck. There was very little lietwecn Quest and Rose of Athens, who were two lengths off, and the latter got third money. Last Crust had the ground to his liking, and he runs well at Trentham, but Lady lingers also had conditions in her favour. She. carried s,’lb over, however, while Last Crust claimed 3lb. allowance, and Lady Fingers having forced the pace all the wav it beat her over the last bit. Quest’ran disappointingly, but Rose of Athens will pick ut> races in company a little less select. THE OFFICERS’ HANDICAP. Avonlea, Benmure Entre Nous, Ma A tll J? u , r , n Fapaponga, Normal Life, Go-d Dollar, and Idleness were scratched for the concluding event leav ing eleven runners, Tinohari making a second appearance. Piquant was mad'o a solid favourite, but backers received a facer when she whipped across the rear of the field ns the tapes went up, and was left nt tho po°t. Axle also bolted from his rider prior to the start, and after running about the truck for a while eventually jumped tho rails and made off into (he bush. Bonlita, Tinohari and. Tnfrina led to the course proper, where Tntrina lost her place. Bonlita and 'Tinohari had a great mce up the straight, but tho Jnt.inr wore her opponent down and won by half a length. Bonny Marion was two lengths away in third nle.ee, followed by Martinique and Ixuiy Grty.
