NEWS AND NOTES

GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET STRIKE INTENSIFIES QUIETUDE. Hr Teleghai-ii—Press Association. Christchurch, April 25.

The Easter holidays ordinarily mean a quiet week in the grain and produce market, but the quietude has been intensified this year by the strike. Potatoes are the principal article affected, merchants who have northern contracts to face have generally advised growers from whom they have purchased to suspend digging, or if that is impossible to pit or hold in sacks. The terms of sale under which the grain and produce merchants operate provide that in case of a strike deliveries may be made within a reasonable time. The Flora sailed for Auckland on Wednesday, but her consignment was small as many lines booked for her did not arrive, being held up at Christchurch. These will now be used for local consumption, so that with the potatoes that are grown in close proximity to the city and can be carted in. there should be no dear prices locally. Digging was proceeding briskly when the railwaymen downed tools. When work is resumed there is certain to be a rush to hit delayed contracts. In the meantime, there is very little buying by merchants Quotations are nominally X 5 10s. at country stations. Practically all business has been bus. pended in oats and chaff. “Nothing doing" sums up the position in regard to seeds, for which the North Is.and is the main outlet. An intimation is given in this issue that, owing to the railway strife, it has been found necessary to postpone the stud Jersey sales to be held on behalf of Messrs. C. G. C. Wickham, both of Waitaua, whose herds comprise 29 and 23 head respectively. It will take place on May 13. Both breeders have very good cattle, Mr. Knuckey’s catalogue lining all the more attractive on account of the inclusion of four daughters of Mr. John Hale’s ex-herd bull Soumise Tom.
