POPPY DAY
NEARLY £9OO COLLECTED There was an excellent response of the public to the Poppy Day appeal, made by the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association, on Thursday. This year 40.000 poppies had been made, and of these approximately 15,000 had been sold. This generous effort of the public is very much appreciated by the R.S.A., and. will be more so by the disabled soldiers and their dependants, to whom the proceeds will be devotedFollowing is a detailed list of amounts collected at the various stations:—Mrs. Rist (Kirkcaldie and Stains). £9O 3s. ; Mrs. Wilkins (Kelburn), £49 4s. lOd.; Mrs. Murphy (.Tames Smith’s Corner), £lOl 6s. Bd.; Mrs. Rountree (Courtenay Place), £33; Mrs. Hickey (Boulcott Street), £72 Is.; Mrs. Dormer (Stewart Dawson’s), £133 18s. 6d. ; Mrs- Hempton (Woodward Street). £44 19s. Id.; Mrs. Bramley (Government Buildings), £7l os. Bd._; Mrs. McKenzie (G.P.0.), £lB9 Us. 3d.; Miss Subman (wharves), £64 os. lid.; Mrs. Angus, £ll 165.; Nurse McCarthy, £3 165.: Miss Meadowcroft, £5 16s. 6d.; total £B7O 14s. od. There are several returns yet to erme in from suburban districts, and it is expected that with these the grand total will reach the £lOOO mark. Collections taken in connection with the Anzac Day services at the Town Hall yesterday totalled £122 9s. 3d.
