EINSTEIN THEORY
THIRD PREDICTION ESTABLISHED THE SUN AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY (Rec .April 25, 11.5 p.m.) New York, April 24. The “New York Times’ ” Chicago correspondent says Dr. Charles St. John, solar physicist of Mount Wilson observatory, Pasadena, an internationally noted investigator of the theory of relativity, has announced that he has experimentally established Einstein’s third prediction, namely, the gravitational displacement of solar spectrum lines. Dr. St. John, asserting that displacement occurs in the exact quantities predicted by Einstein, says: “I used a spectroscope which stretches the sun’s light into a beautiful band of prismatic colours, crossed by dark lines, whose changes of position and intensity enable scientists to read the evidence regarding • the strength of gravitational fields. My spectroscope now reveals a slight shift of these solar spectrum lines toward the red region, indicating a displacement, thus fulfilling the third prediction.” Dr. St. John, referring to the practical sido of the investigation, said: “Wo are rapidly exhausting the world’s sources of energy. AVe must learn to store the sun’s energy or get energy from matter, hence we must discover how to do tilings which are proceeding in tho sun, which is the great unexplained engine of energy.”—Aus.N.Z.
