HARBOUR RESCUE
BY SHIP’S OFFICER. When a waterside worker, George Ballard, was unloading some dumps of flax from trucks alongside the Marama at Taranaki Street Wharf last Wednesday one of the dumps fell and knocked him into tho harbour between the wharf and the ship, abreast No. 1 hatch- Tho alarm was given, and although a score of men stood by offering suggestions for the rescue of Ballard, who was in difficulties, no one did anything practical. Mr. E. J. Lundie, second officer of the Mara--IM, who was on the vessel’s forecastle head, ran to the gangway and on to the wharf, and throwing off his cap and coat dived into the water.. Ballard was just sinking for the third time when his rescuer grasped him and swam with him to a wharf stringer. A basket was, lowered bv ihe ship’s winch, the officer lifted Ballard into the basket, and joining him both were hoisted on to the wharf. Tho halfdrowned man was rendered first aid, and after medical attention was conveyed to his homo in Hopper Street, where ho soon recovered. Mr. Lundie s effort is to be reported to the Royal Humane Society.
