ATHLETICS

’VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES The athletic side of university life was (riven its full share of public attention yesterday, when, in connection with the Victoria College silver jubilee celebrations, the annual athletic championships were decided at Athletic Park. Ideal weather conditions prevailed, there was a. large and decidedly enthusiastic gathering of spectators, and tho high standard of inter-university contests was well maintained. The honours of the day went to Otago, who, with 17 points, secured th© Shield, Victoria College being second with If points. Cainterbury ' gained 7 points, while Auckland came last with four. There were some really outstanding performiaarcesi, (and several records were lowered. The only hitch in the proceedings was the refusal of tho starter’s pistol to fire. A whistle was substituted, but the results were far from satisfactory. A fresh New Zealand ’Varsity record was established by Priestley (Victoria) in the mile championship.- Eight competitors faced the starter, and from a good start Jordan (Otago) went to the front, closely followed by Priestley and Griffen (Victoria), and Vallance (Auckland) in that order. The lead was maintained for half the distance, which was covered in the smart time of 2min. llsec., but at tho third lap Priestley drew ahead, and Vallance went up to second place, with Griffen a rlo«> third, and Jordan fourth. One hundred yards from home the leader lengthened his stride, and accepted an even challenge from his ” colleague, who won tho event last year. A great finish resulted in Priestley gaining the verdict by three yards. Vallance was third. The time of 4min. 31 4-sseo. lowers the previous record by one-fifth of a second. The winner holds the De la Maro Challenge Cup for the ensuing ye The 440 yards hurdles championship was a gift to Low, the crack Canterbury all-round performer, who also won the putting the weight and the long jump events. He took the lead from the jump, and, after the first hurdle, was joined by his co-representative, Calder, and together they cleared tho balance of the sticks in fine style and about three yards in advance of the rest of the field. Some 20 yards from home Low, who was running beautifully, sprinted, and walfcea in with four yards to spare. Calder appeared to be a certainty for second place, but suddenly he was challenged by Morgan (Otago), and proved unequal to the effort. The Wellington representatives were never in the hunt . The 200 yards championship was run in heats, and four competitors, Tracy and Leadbetter (Victoria) Ridgen (Canterbury) and Morgan (Otago) hued up for tho final. The Otago representative set the pace from the start, but when the straight was entered Tracy, who was going all out, shot ahead and won from Morgan by a yard and a half. Leaatetter was I good third, but Ridgen did not complete the distance. The contest for the 100 y ar jJ® championship produced a surprise. The start was bad. and from the bunch of.competitors near the tape Morgan dashed ahead, and won by a touch from Miller (Auckland) Thirdi p ace was not awarded. If a decision had been given it Otago d wh a o V has’won < the rec ord with MkckeJizie led off well and maintamed a comfortable difference all the way. lie was challenged at one stage by Nicholls (Auckland), but in a fine spurt he finished with eight yards to spare. Glarke (Auckland) was third, 30 y ar<lß behind. Tracy (Victoria) won the 440 yor tl . s championship with six yards to the good. His tme of 51 2-ssre. Is on even terms with the New Zealand Varsity record. There was a fine race for second place betwren Davies and Ridgen, the former making a fine burst of speed and securing the position by half a yardThe 880 yards championship was contested by eight men. The field was strung out from the start, and Jordan (Otago) made the pace for the first lap. Davies (Victoria). took, the lead for a while, but about 300 yards from home he was displaced by Forbes (Otago), who gradually increased the lead and breasted the tape with 10 yards to. spare. Davies was second, with Brassington and Wren equal in third position. The time 2min. 21-ssec., equals the New Zealand ’Varsity record. Through the agency of Priestley, who ran a splendid race, Victorias colours were hoisted in the three mile championship. Vallance (Auckland) made the pace, but at the last lap the Wellington man cut ahead, and after a fine sprint he secured the decision by the margin of six yards. Vallance ran well, but was not equal to the spirited chailenge of his opponent. Ba-oby (Otago) wns a good third. The 120 hurdles was won by Morgan (Otavo), and the final event of the day, tho 800 yards relay race, went to Victoria. , ...
