WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS KEEN PLAY AT HERETAUNGA A. DUNCAN SHOWS IMPROVED FORM Tho Wellington provincial golf championships were advanced a further stage at Heretaunga yesterday in weather entirely favourable to th© competitors. In the second round of the championship, there were one or two close contests to decide who would appear in the semi-finals, which are to be played off this morning. In the first round T. H. Horton beat J. W. Ward, 5 and. 4, and he also carried the honours against H. Balneavis in the second round. There was little between the players going out, and at the fifteenth Horton holed out in 2, with a beautifully long putt. 1 It was tho winning stroke, Horton’s card reading 76 and Balneavis’, 74. In the round between J. T. Tucker and R. O. Chesney, tho former made a splendid recovery to finish one up st the nineteenth. Chesney was ,2 up at tho sixteenth, after which Tucker came up steadily to win and incidentally qualify to meet Horton »this morning. As was generally expected, the veteran player, A. D. S. Dunean, proved too stiff a proposition for E. O. Hales, whom ho defeated, 4 and. 2. Duncan showed a big improvement on his play of late and was able to triumph over consistent golf. He finished with a 76, but went out plus 3. Hales completed the round in 80. J. H. Drake had two up with three to play in his round with J. D. Hawkins in the second round. Hawkins won tho sixteenth, halved the next, and came out all square at tho eighteenth. At tho nineteenth, Hawkins holed out in four, but Drake played an awkward putt and lost tho hole after an exciting contest. The bogey handicap was easily carried off by AV. IT. Percy (Masterton), who finished well, 5 up. Going out, he took 42, which was 3 over bogey, but he did tho journey homo in 35, three under bogey. W. K. Cooke, who finished three up, took second place. J. D. Hawkins tied with J. Parker in tho medal handicap. Mrs. D. AV. Duthie, wife of the president, will present tho prizes at the conclusion of tho tournament this evening. Gunson (son of the Mayor of Auckland), who is not yet 21 in the first round played H. B. Lusk to the 19th, winning one up. In the second Gunson beat J. H. Goss, amateur New Zealand champion, two and one. In the qualifying rounds Gunson was the last of the sixteen who qualified. The semi-finals and finals will bo played to-morrow, Gunson playing C.
