On the East Coast railway, between Eskdale and Tutira, there are five steam shovels at work. This number (states the Napier “Telegraph”) will be further increased at a very’ early date by another three, one of which is at Petano awaiting removal to the works, whilst the second is at Wairoa. The third, which is being imparted from Eengland, is of the latest design and equipped with caterpillar wheels, thus giving it an advantage over other shovels. It also has the advantage by being able to shift material quicker than the present ones in use.
