HOLIDAY RACING COMMENCES

MEETINfiS AT AUCKLAND, TAUHERENIKAU, FEILDING AND RIVERTON NIGGER MINSTREL DEFEATS MOTLEY RAPINE’S BRILLIANT WIN AT RANDWICK — ‘ The Easter racing carnival commenced on Saturday. At Auckland the principal event, the Easter Handicap, was won by an outsider in Hipo; Parody won the Oaks, and Nigger Minstrel defeated Motley in the Champagne Stakes. The Feilding Cup went to Trespass, whose success was long overdue. Rational won the open sprint. Merry Day was responsible for a good effort in the Easter Handicap x at Tauherenikau, and in the South Island Loughrea won the Riverton Cup. The 'racing at Randwick saw the New Zealand-owned and trained Rapine beat Australia’s best at weight for age, while Whittier broke the Australian record for a mile in the Doncaster Handicap.

TAUHERENIKAU RACES MERRY DAY WINS EASTER HANDICAP RAILWAY TO PRINCE HAL The first day’s events of the autumn meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club were held at Tauherenikau on Satur day, and some fine racing was for a large attendance, which included a E£ »d number of Wellington patrons. “4 early in the morning were not too bright, as it had rained overnight, and the morning was wet and overcast. About an hour before the first race the weather cleared, and the racing was held under favourable conditions, while the ram considerably improved the track. Merry Day won the chief event after an interesting contest, running strongly over the concluding stages of the race in a style suggestive of her good form eighteen mentis ago. The locally-owned and trained Prince Hal accounted for J the open sprint. Ho bore a very bright ” appearance, and had too much in ieserve at the finish for the Trenthumtrained Piquant. Trentham stables did well, wT-nni-ng three races with Spoony, Stream, and Entre Nous, while placemoney was secured with Piquant, Aeriform, Star Shell, and Tinohan. The course and appointments were looking their best, and the details and arrangements worked smoothly under Mr. 0- J. Corlyon and his assistants, a noticeable and commendable feature being the punctuality observed in the closing of the totalisator and the running of the events. In the first race it appeared as if the prompt closing cf the machine took a lot of investors unawares, but it had a good effect, and the strict observance of the time-table enabled the last race to be run within a few minutes of the advertised time, and visitors were able to get away without delay. There was only one incident to need the attention of the judicial committee during the day, and that was in connection with the running of the Martinborough Welter Handicap, in which Hytinus met with an accident which made it necessary to destroy him. After hearing evidence the stewards decided that the mishap was purely accidental, no blame being attachable to anybody. The sum of .£18,302 was put through the machine, representing an increase of £lB2 on the first day of last year’s autumn meeting, when £18,082 was handled. MAIDEN HACK HANDICAP. Gold Dollar was the only scratching for the Maiden Hack Race and Kilfaire was made a firm favourite. Cinders and Ardfinnan, ran to the front from Kilfairo and Spoony, and this was the order to the top of the straight. Spoony put in his claim at the distance, and won comfortably by a length with Cinders, half a length in front of Kilfalre, who finished better than Ardfinnan, and beat him for third money by a neck. Peach Brandy, who was not too well placed in the early stages, was next. The winner won with a good ’hand and Cinders went well. It was her first race. They were rather n poor lot, but the winner is a rood sort. Al UK AI WELTER. Mark and Lady Gay were taken out of the Afokai Welter Handicap, and in a good betting race Bonny Marion was made favourite. Good Mark and favourite were first away, and led from All Gold and Debate. The two leaders had the finish to themselves R,™?? Marion winning comfortably bv a nT'; th \ > ,. n r b ‘y e was four or five lengths Anilol’ Wlth S6 UP - AU G ° ld rnn RAILWAY HANDICAP. he L° u nd H Yti nna were scratched tor the Railway Handicap. Piquant was backed down to even money. She drew a position on the extreme outside and she ha<l to be made a lot of use of in the first stages of the race ti> get on terms with Prince Hal from the inside berth The latter and Alabama were first to show up, but Piquant had run to the front when a furlong had been covered, while Prince Hal was closely attended by Alabama and Foolish Chi the turn. Piquant had a lead of two, lengths, but Prince Hal was going well. At this stage Alabama and Foolish began to fade away, while Chimera became noticeable. Some Bed was well back, and Happy Days was last. At the top of the straight Piquant was still 'in front, but Prince Hal tackled her at the distance, and she had not enough in reservo to beat him home, losing by a length after a good race. Her rider cased her in the last bet, enabling Chim- ’ era to get within a neck for third money. Some Red was two lengths away in fourth place, but lie had never looked dangerous. The next to finish were Mountain March and Happy Days, the finishing effort of the latter tailing the eye for a future race over a longer distance. Laughing Stock bled, and came in last. EASTER HANDICAP. Refrigeration and Passionless were not saddled up for the principal event. The locally-trained Bitters found most favour with backers, but there was support for nearly all the runners. Aeriform took the lead from barrier rise, closely attended by Printemps, Merry Day, Bumptious, and Bitters. Merry Day was steadied when they had settled down, and Aeriform led out of the straight from Printemps, Bumptious, and Blitters, with Little River next. So much pace were the leaders cracking on that when the race was nearly half over Merry Day was several away, with only Scion behind her. Turning for home tho leaders began to fei the effects of the pace, and Merry Day closed on them. At the top of the straight she was on terms with Aeriform, and she camo on to win very nicely by a length from Bumptious, who secured a run on tho rails, and beat Aeriform by a similar marpin. Bitters was a couple of

lengths further off in fourth followed by Priniemps and Little River. The riders of the leaders showed poor judgment of pace, and with the exception of Bumptious they had not a run left when the straight was reached. Bumptious went well, but nothing o the day hod a chance with the winner, who appears very nearly back to her best form. Scion refused to gallop at all generously, and he was the last to finish.

TWO-YEAR-OLD STAKES. Miss O’Dille, Kilmint, and Jubilance wore scratched for the Two-year-old Stakes, leaving thirteen runners, of whom the bracketed pair, Star Shell and Calm Eve. were solidly supported Star Shell and Agitato got away well, but Bomdeer and Subiection soon reached the models, and the latter went to iho front On the turn Subjection, Star Shell, and Agitato wore going best, and Subjection, ridden out. beat Star Shell by a length and a half Agitato mn rather wide on entering the straight, and the judge, was a length behind Star Shell Ho was a bit nnluckv in not negotiating the turn better Fdea a was fourth, but she had not mneh to spare from Kilmar and Paula. Kilmar finished wen. MEMBERS’ HACK HANDICAP. The scraching of All. Gold. Happy Days and Prince were withdrawn from tho Martmborougu Handicap, and Mangawhero made a solid favourite with a lot or inouev “so for Lady Ben. It was a race of peculiar incidents Atapo got _ out wel and then was sent back to last. Thi. left Peneus and Hytinus in the lead, and on tho turn Manga" hero came up on the inside of Hytinus, "ho immediately dropped right out of the contest. At the top of the straight Avonlea was handy to Peneus, and she came on to win by a length and a half, while Atapo put in a great run from the rear, and beat the top weight for second money by a neck. Lady Ben was three lengths away fourth, with Mangawhero next. Rather too much use was made of Peneus with his big weight, and it looked as if he should have been the winner, while the ground lost by Atano considerably affected his chance. .the rider of Hytfnus dismounted when his horse stopped, and it was found that he had broken the off-hind fetlock. He was destroyed. An inquiry into the incident was adjourned until to-day, FERRY HACK HANDICAP. Lady Gay and Avonlea were scratched for the concluding event and in the field of twelve; Entre Nous and Glimpse carried 50 per cent, of the money. Bonlita and Tinohari began best, and led to the straight, with Entre Nous and Glimpse handy, Puketoi and Heathcote the nearest of the others. In the run home Entre Nous stayed on best, and beat Tinohari by half a length. Tatrina, who was last away, put in a fine rnn over the concluding stages, and was two lengths behind Tinohari, with Glimpse fourth, and then Bonlita, Sonny Boy, and Martinique. There will be racing also at Waiptikurau. Kumara, Tttcearton, and Beaumont. At all the principal meetings the first race is sot down for 11.30 a.m.

Wellington visitors to Tauherenikau can. travel by trains leaving Lambtan at 6.35 and 8.30 a.m., returning at 5.20, 6.55, and 7.50 p.m. Horses at Tauherenikau that showed good form on tho first day were Hyama. Entre Nous, Lady Ben, Glimpse, Kilmar, Happy Days, Good Mark, and Cinders.

The Great Easter and Autumn llandicups at liiccarton should be good races, llazz.e Dazzle and IJoadicea have recently come on well in their track efforts, and Pilliewinkie, provided the track: remains firm, should run prominently.

J. Barry and D. Butler went south on Saturday night after riding at Tj.uherenikau. Amongst Barry’s mounts will lie Clandhu, Lady Bentinck, and Sunart. The first-named twp should run well in their respective engagements. Tutankhamen and Ma Boughal have both been doing good work of late, and are expected to run well forward at luccarton.

Giantkiller was well supported in the race at Hororata when he fell. Ho has since been domg nicely on the tracks. Ajax, a gelding by Panmure—Orlygia, who disappointed lus connections at the Wellington summer meeting, is to be produced at M aipukurau to-day.

The nominations received for the Fleet meeting at Trentham on Saturday next must: lie oonsiilcred very satisfactory Visiting horses are well lepresented. A particularly pleasing feature has been the response of owners in the steeplechase. With horses like Omahu, Master Peter, Ranui. First Line, and Carawock engaged there is the material for a firstclass contest. Everything ixiints to the visitors seeing an enjoyable day s racing.

Nobody would begrudge Mr. W. ‘RKemball his' win in the Feilding Cup with Trespass. Tho Tressady gelding had not won a race since September, 1922, when he beat Thespian and V> innin" Hit in the Eclipse Stakes ot Wanganui'. Mr. Kemball keeps a good team ot horses in work, and ti win for his colours is always popular. He has horses racing this Easter at Auckland, leilding and Wairarapa, and in addition to the success of Trespass, Avonlea scored at Tauherenikau, while Bumptious was second in the chief handicap; and at Feilding Tenterfield got placed in the Hurdles while Bonetter took second money in the Presidents Handicap at AucklaJi<l«

The successes of Pc'irody Minstrel were well anticipated by the public on Saturday. Parody must rank as about the best of her age and sex this season, and the victory of hugger Mcnstrel appears to have been a veiy con vincing one. Hipo’s win in the Faster Handicap at Auckland was in the nature ot a surprise. His form over six furlongs has been fairly consistent for some > 5 it was not generally expected that he would be equal to a mile in the best company. He does a lot of cacnio throughout the Nortn Island, and his owner-trainer E. George deserves tho 10 ward if only for his perse\ erance. Rapine appears to have scored a 'brilliant victory in the Autumn Stakes at ilandwick on Saturday, and his success will be well received in sporting circles in the Dominion. The time of the race was not fast, considering the mile record was broken in the succeeding event. Rapine’s running suggests that in Ballvmena New Zealand possesses, a neatly high-class three-year-old. David, according to well-informed writers, need.ed a bit more time before being seen at his best. He neverthlcss seems to have run a great race, winch should sharpen him up, and the future weight-for-age events at the meeting should see some mere stirring contests. Ine Hawk probably found the distance beyond him, although he is reported ns having thrown out a challenge in the straight. There is no wmghb-forlage race at Randwick to-day, the big event being the Sydney Cup, two miles. The cablegram credits Whittier with breaking the mile Australasian record at Randwick on Saturday by -Isec., when he won the Doncaster Handicap m Imin. 36lsec As a matter of fact it is l-10sec. faster than the previous best recorded by Thespian when he beat Gloaming in the Islington Plate at. Ellerslie in 1921. Whtttier showed unmistakab.e s'gns ot returning to form at the recent Itosehill meeting, and his mile on Saturday, with Ost. 51b. up, was a wonderful performance. Receipt is acknowledged with thanks, from the Christchurch /'Pressf Company, of the second of this season’s pocket "editions of the Turf Bester It contains complete records of all running and trotting horses up to March 29, from tho date ot the first edition, December 8, and is an invaluable help to all students of form. A.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING RAPINE WINS AUTUMN STAKES WHITTIER’S RECORD MILE IN DONCASTER (Rec. April 20, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, April 19. The Australian Jockey Club’s carnival opened in glorious sunshin • Tho track was in perfect order. Eighty thousand people were present, but they found it a difficult job to pick the riteht horse in the big events. Rapine s win in the Autumn Stakes was magnificent, the finish standing out among some of the finest struggles seen at Randwick. The Whittier-Trimacre fight was also memorable, while Daay Valais’s runaway Victory in the St. Leger covered the other competitors with ignominy. A fierce thunderstorm and downpour of rain tc-night will probably make the going a bit heavier aj" Randwick on Monday. The tracks dry quickly, however, and unless more ram falls little damage will be done. Results: —

Messrs. G. Tye’s and J. R. Corteen’s br. c. The Monk, by Absurd — Cowl, 3yrs., Sst. 81b (Cairns) 3 Blackadder and Valrona were the nonstarters. Excitement was running high by the- time this race was started. Tne popular idea was that Clare’s owner simply needed to col-ect the prize, but though lying handy about fourth for most of the journey, the English sprinter was never dangerous. Whittier quickly ran to the front and kept moving nicely to the distance, where ha was challenged by the speedly Trimacre. Vuldoona also threatened to make trouble, but Whittier and Trimacre fought cut a desperate finish, Whittier gaining tho verdict by half a neck, just staving off a splena’id finish by Toohey.
