A NEW LETTER CABLE SERVICE

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA TO OPERATE FROM MAY 1 The Postmaster-General (the Hon. J. G. Coates) states that he has been in communication with tho Commonwealth telegraph administration for some little time in an endeavour to inaugurate a night letter-telcotam service between tho Deminion and tho Commonwealth. A satisfactory agreement has now been reached, and the new service will be available on May 1. The rate of these night letter telegrams, which may bo transmitted by cither the “Pacific’ or the “Eastern” route will bo a minimum of 3s. for a message of 20 words, and 2d. for each succeeding word. (The ordinary rate for telegrams to Australia is 4Jd. per word). The conditions of acceptance will be much the same as those in force for week-end letter-telegrams exchanged with the United Kingdom. They differ, however. in that delivery of night lotter-telegranis will be made at the office of destination by the first postal delivery on the morning following the date of lodgment. The text is to lie restricted to plain English or French language, but figures and commercial marks and expressions will be allowed. Tho introduction of this service is considered by the Postmaster-General to mark a decided. step forward in the matter of reducing cable rates, and is expected to be greatly appreciated by the people of both countries.
