INTER-’VARSITY TOURNAMENT Weather conditions were perfect and tho attendance of spectators large on the occasion of tho annual contest among tho four Universities for the Tennis Shield. Tho matches were played on the Wellington Club courts By far tho best form was displayed by E. B. W. Smyth. of Otago, and ho should lie in the final in all three events in which he plays. I. Seay, of Canterbury, after a hotly contested doubles in which tho Canterbury pair just got homo against Hollings and Paul, of Victoria College, was not in any fit condition to wage unequal battle with Otago’s first, and was outclassed. winning only two games in two sots. R. R. T. Young had a long drawn out match against Fotheringham of Auckland. Ono of the greatest matches of the day was tho doubles between Seay and B, B. Loughnan (Canterbury) and Hoilings' and Paul (Victoria College). The Canterbury pair won out in the third set at 9—7. The exhibition given by Paul provided perhaps the most spectacular tennis of tho whole day. Comparatively, the standard of tennis among tho ladies was higher than that of the men. Neither of the

Misses Partridges was extended, while Miss Tracy, playing a somewhat casual game, was taker to 11 —9 before triumphing over Miss Witherow (Otago). The doubles between Misses Tracy and Gardner (Victoria College) and Misses Saunders and Sowden was one of the matchas of the day, all four ladies takino- the net and volleying and smashing with surprising brilliancy. Miss Sowden was remarkably steady with her ground strokes. The following are the results: — Men’s Singles. First Round. —R. R. T. Young (Victoria College) beat H.
