CORPORATION STEAM SHOVEL
GETTING READY FOR ACTION. In preparation for an attack on the Wallace Street hill, the corporation’s new steam shovel, or mechanical digger, made a precarious passage from the Clyde -Quay yards to Wallace Street yesterday. The new machine is hardly as mobile as a war tank, though it travels on low-set caterpillar wheels. It gets along fairly well on a straight course, but has to be manoeuvred round corners. The machine took four hours to travel a little oyer a mile, but at length it reached its objective without accident. A few days hence will see the shovel boring into Wallace Street, its mission being to take, the cap off the rise in that street to improve the grade for the coming tram tracks.
