DAIRY INDUSTRY

IN STRONG POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND AVERAGE QUALITY VERY HIGH Sydney, March 19. Mr. Meares, general manager of the Coastal Farmers’ Co-operative Society, interviewed on his return from a visit to New Zealand, said that his inquiry into the Dominion’s dairying industry had strongly impressed him that it was in a solidly-entrenched position, as well as being in a flourishing condition, and a rapid extension of the industry was apparent. There were also coupled with these a fertility of the dairying lands and a high ratio of production apparent. What most of all impressed him, in comparing New Zealand with Australia, was the intelligent concentration of tho bulk of the farmers in the Dominion upon greater production per cow and per acre and a determination to up lift by standardisation the quality of his products, both intrinsically and in flavour. The manufacture in Australia of the choicest butter was equal to anything he saw in New Zealand, but the average quality in New Zealand was much higher. A fundamental factor in this development was New Zealand’s better rainfall, but the soil and country as a whole did not impress him as better or richer than Australia’s dairying areas; indeed, it was rather the reverse. —Press Assn. FREEING CATTLE FROM TUBERCULOSIS FINANCING SPAHLINGER London, March 18. Mr. Spahlinger, accompanied by Sir James Allen, interviewed Sir George Newman, chief medical officer of tho Ministry of Health, and discussed suggestions whereby they might help Mr. Spahlinger financially to ensure a continued production of the serum. Mr. Spahlinger has not yet accepted, but Sir James Allen is hopeful of a satisfactory arrangement. “When I was Defence Minister,” said Sir James Allen, “I saw so much tuberculosis that I decided to help along any possible cure. I am anxious that New Zealand should ’be freed from tuberculosis. If we could also tell the world that our cattle were free from tuberculosis, the effect upon the dairy industry would be tremendous.”—Sydney “Sun” Cable.
