4 AT TAUHERENIKAU RACES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Carterton, January 24. Before Mr. 8. L. P. Frfee, S.M . in the Magistrate’s Court at Featherston yesterday, Henry‘William Morrison, of Carterton, was chargied on five informations, with laying totalisaor odds at the Wairarapa races at Tauherenikau on January 2. . , . The case for the prosecution showed that the defendant was watched during the progress of the races, and was seen taking monev from different people on the outside stand, where he remained during thb progress of several races. Later, when searched, he was found in possession of a quantity of silver, and a note-book found in the left sock, contained entries which, according to the inspector, were the primitive methods adopted by the layers of totalisator odds. The defendant stated that he was an engineer employed at a brick ana tile works in the district, and denied the charges. He was with a party of friends, who were making up tickets, and the entries in the book were these arrangements. Tho Magistrate said that none of the entries in the book represented a ticket having been made up. fondant was convicted and fined £5 and costs £1 16s. on the_ first information, and £5 and costs 7s. on each of the oth-r four charges. Time was allowed in which to pay.
