ORIGINAL OWNERS’ INTERESTS

The hearing of the Pouakani case, which arises out of the original acquirement of the Wairarapa Lake by the Government, was continued _at Greytown on Thursday by the Native Land Court. Chief Judge .Tones presiding. and Mr. Kingi Tahiwi acting, as clerk and interpreter. Tho various claimants were represented by Messrs. Gawith (Masterton), 'Thompson (Grevtewn), Elcrs (Masterton), Ware. P. Waitai (Wellington), Kuku Karaitiana, and Teo Tipene. After some discussion as to the methixl to be adopted in defining the relative interests, during which the Judge explained the various evstems, a scheme vas proposed by Mr. Ware Waitai to divide the owners into three generations—parent, child, and grandchild —and allotting share’s to each section accordingly. After the matter had been thoroughly discussed it was practically decided to adopt the scheme suggested, with variations if such should to required by any special circumstances. On Saturday morning the Natives reported that' they had almost arrived at an amicable settlement. There irere still some small adjustments to be made, but they had every. hope that with more time for discussion, a satisfactory settlement would be arrived at. They asked for an adjournment until Monday, which was grhntt'd.
