ATHLETICS

WELLINGTON AND AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS MUNRO LOWERS AUSTRALASIAN RECORD ’ HIGH JUMP RECORD BROKEN AT AUCKLAND TEAM CHOSEN TO VISIT AUSTRALIA Provincial athletic championship meetings were held at Auckland and Wellington on Saturday. The outstanding performance at Wellington was registered by P. Munro, who registered a fresh Australasian record for throwing the discus; he also lowered the standard in the putting the shot event. At Auckland the New Zealand high jump record was broken by the holder. The Wellington provincial athletic charpfuonship meeting and ■ McVilly Shield competition were held at Athletic Park on Saturday in. the presence of about 3500 spectators. The entries for the various events constituted a record for a championship meeting in l ho Dominion, and the quality of the talent. was reflected in the extremely close finishes, the clipping of a standard time or distance, and in one instance — throwing the discus —the lowering of the Australasian record by a substantial margin The handicap events also were weli contested, and great interest was shown in the cvclincr events, in which big field- were the order of the day. The high standard displayed in the ladies’ champ’onship and handicap races was a distinct feature. The weather was fine, with a slight southerly wind, whi -h did not aid the nerfofmers. On the dav’s showing the Wellington amateur Athletic Club were the most successful, and, with 59| points to their credit, they win the McVilly Shield. Wairarapn were second _ with. 37, and Victoria College third with 31. The firs*- event, the three-mile walk championship, produced one of the finest exhibitions witnessed locally for viirs. The winner was S. G. Mclntosh, of Victoria' College, and he covered the distance in the smart time of 22min 52 2-ssec., thus clipping 7 3-ssec. off the standard time. He gained the lead from Hicklii'g at the end of the first lap, and thereafter proceeded to increase it. Nearing the home bend, he overtook Lovatt, then lying third, and the latter nut on a great spurt, to which the ’Varsity man eagerly responded, and in a gr-'at finish he breasted the tape with something like a clear round to spare. The opin’dn was expressed by tex-walkers that Mclntosh is one of the finest exponents they have seen in action for some years. In ’the one mile championship, honours again went to Mclntosh, whose win was by another comfortable margin. L A Tracv proved too good for the rest of ths field in the' 220 yards .championship. He made fairly steady going in the first heat, but the pace of Lewis and Jenkins in the final gave him cause for thought, and he breasted the tape with two yards to spare. Barely half a vard separated Dewis and Jenkins. Throwing- Che 161 b. hammer championship saw in action Harvey, Munro and Brown. They finished in that order, Harvey placing the decision beyond all doubt by registering a throw of 129 ft. 2in„ as against Munro s effort of 10-ft. 7in Brown’s distance was 99tt. Tin H. E. IVilson was to the fore in the T>o yards hurdles championship,_ and showed a flash of his old formi in the final, when he covered Hie distance in 16sec„ and won from Whyte with fiv yards to snare. He won also the 440 yards hurdles, but was handicapped conSide^hyV y (Wenfitl) and Lozelle (Wairarapa) drew in the high jump championship for first place, the heiq; t registered being sft. 6m., an inch below the standard. , ~ _ The mile flat championship was annexed by R. A. Bose, who also got Hie decision in the three mile event. H>s times on both occasions were S oad -,. p Munro lowered the standard distance bv 3ft. 12in. in the putting the shot cliampionship, and 2 n growing the discus clipped 14ft 3 l-6in. off the Australasian record, his throw being l-7ft. BHn. In the javelin throwing championship he beat A. J. Morgan (Wairarapa) by a few feet. The latte L.’J as -P“' lucky. His third throw went 146 ft. Im., but was not recorded, as his foot had just overstepped the mark. _ The mile cvcle championship was robbed of a deal of its interest through a mishap which occurred to the leader, 1. Davis, at the half-mile mark. ' The 100 yards championship for the Guise Cup provided an exciting finish between Lewis. Leadbetter, and Tracy. T.eadbetter led for the better portion of the distance, but with 10 yards left Lewis ’drew up, with Tracy close at hand, and the verdict went to the southerner on the tape. Tracy was third, and Jenkins fourth. The time recorded was G. Harvey (Wairarapa) did well in the pole vault championship, and recorded 10ft. fiin.—standard height. He unsuccessfully essayed to equal his own and the New Zealand record of lift. 3in. A close race in the half-mile championship for the Pollock Cup resulted in a win for C. H. Taylor, of Canterbury, by about three-quarters of a yard from R. Gully (Wairarapa). iTalf way round Taylor secured the lead from Campbell, but in the straight Gully opened out and a great finish between him and Taylor was the outcome. W. Wilton, of Manawatu, exceeded the standard distance by Bin. in the hop. step and jump championship, while in the long jump his distance was a 2in. advance. The 440 yards championship went to Tracy, wjio cut the distance out in 51 4-ssec., which was one-fifth of a second better fhan standard time. Bigden, the cx-Waitaki athlete, led the field for'most of the journey, but he could not equal Tracy’s sprint when the tape’ showed un. Victoria College, chiefly through the excellent sprint made by T.eadbetter in the last lap. won the mile inter-club relay race, and took the championship from Wellington. TO VISIT AUSTRALIA N.Z. TEAM SELECTED ' The final selection of the team to carry New Zealand’s banner in the Australasian championships next month was made on Saturday night. " Of the three, representatives already > chosen, R. A. Rose, winner of the one and three mile champ : onsh.ips at the provincial meeting in the afternoon, will not be eligible for 1 the trip on account of business arrangements, and the team will now comprise:— IT. E. Wilson (We’lington). P. Munro (Wellington). McHolm (Canterbury). G. Harvey (Wairarapa). L. A. Tracy (Wellington). In addition to the men already chosen, the selectors adjudicated upon the qualifications of A. Lewis (Canterbury), who won the 100 yards championship in 10 seconds, and G. Mclntosh, whose performance in the one and three mile walking championships, was the subject of much favourable comment. Their inclusion in the team, however, is dependent upon a question of finance, but if the necessary arrangements ean ’be made, it is quite possible that they will accompany the other representatives selected. Muuro will be entered for putting the shot and discus, javelin, decathelon. and hammer throwing, while Wilson is to appear in the 120 and 410 hurdles, and the long jump. Hammer throwing will fall to the lot pf McHolm, and Harvey will compete in the pole vault. Tracy is to contest the 100, 220. and 440 yards. Lewis, if he goes, will enter also for the 100 yards sprint, and Mclntosh will walk in the one and three-mile events. »
