« OPENING OF EXHIBITION. The first exhibition of hobby work conducted under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A. Hobbies Club, and held m the association's gymnasium, Willis Street, was opened on Saturday evening by the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) in the presence of a large number of people. It was impossible, pn an examination of the various exhibits, not to be impressed by the variety and excellence ot the eeveral displays. They are a credit to their makers. Hobbies were of great value in affording, a change in occupation for one engaged in strenuous business, and as a means of occupation after retirement -from a tee ■ work The aim of the Hobbies Club, ho believed to be the development cP the natural taints of its members, and in that direction a need in the community would be met. The exhibition comprised all kinds of machinery, sonio working bv means of compressed air and others by steam. Particularly -outstanding was a little suction pump, about four inches high, a perfect model, pumping water in great style. There was a model of the H.M.S. New Zealand, motor-boats, trains, and yachts. A display of leather work, the exhibit ot lieutenant P. E. Cole, was the centre of much interest. Still. bedridden as the result of serious injuries received in tho Great War, Lieutenant . Cole has seized upon the idea of making•-leather suit-cases, handbags, collar-boxes, musiccases. and the like as a means of hielihood. The designs are excellent. Tlibre are collections of photographs and valuable stamps while several stalls are reserved for trade exhibits.
