BALLOT ON NATIONAL WAGES AGREEMENT <3 NOTICE OF TERMINATION FAVOURED By Telegraph—Pbess Association. —Copyright. London, January 17. It is officially announced that the miners ballot resulted in 510,000 votes for and 114,000 against giving three months notice to terminate the national wages agreement. The miners’ executive will meet the mine-owners this afternoon, and it is expected that they will endeavour to negotiate a revision of tho agreement. In the event of a failure of negotiations, a further ballot and a two-thirds majority of voters are necessary before a strike is possible. —Reuter. LOCOMOTIVE MEN’S STRIKE THREAT HOPE THAT TROUBLE MAY BE AVERTED. London, January 17. Despite the official announcement that Sunday midnight is the time fixed for the strike of locomotive men, industrial circles are optimistic that the trouble may yet be averted as rhe result of unofficial conversations now proceeding. It is believed that the companies are reconsidering their attitude. —Reuter. NOVA SCOTIAN MINERS QUIT WORK Vancouver, January 17. A message from Sydney (Nova Scotia) states that 12,000 coal miners quit work when their contract expired, and the British Empire Steel Corporation lopped 20 per cent, off the wages of 9000 of its men.—Aus.-N.Z.
