Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defence, arrived yesterday morning from tho south.
Mr. J. AV. Collins, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce. has returned from a trip through the Haast Pass, and has resumed duties.
Sir Arthur Mansfield, who held the post of Controller of Fats and Oils in London during tho war, arrived by the Maheno from Sydney on a tour of* the Dominion, Mr. A. F. Ellis, Now Zealand representative on the British Phosphate Commission, who has been on a brief visit to "Wellington, returned to Auckland by thb mid-day express yesterday.
Sir Frederick Young, the English salvage expert, and Ladv Young, arrived by the Maheno from Sydney on a. three months’ visit to tho Dominion. Sir Frederick has been asked to deliver a series of lectures on ship-raising and may find time to do this. During his long career as a salvage officer he has obtained much interesting information about shipwreck mid the salvage of stranded, burnt or ounken vessels as well as countless photographs of queer mishaps. From this collection of negatives he had prepared a comprehensive set of lantern slides but had the misfortune to ' lose tlKg-j. in the fire at Fremantle on board the liner Moldavia, on which vessel he travelled from England. The newly-constituted Marlborough County Council yesterday (states a Press Association message) appointed Air. George Samuel Whiteside, C.E., cf Wanganui a.s county engineer, and Mr. A. J. McLaine, of Blenheim, county clerk. The deaths occurred suddenly yesterday at thb age of 53, of Air. George Noble. Mr. Noble had not been in good health for a considerable time past. He was well known in bowling circles, being a member of the Wellington Club, and an ex-member of the Newtown Club.
