N. E. Brookes is still a power to be reckoned with in tennis (says “The Referee,” referring to the South Yarra tournament). The veteran champion played with ease, skill, and guile, despite a slackening of sjieed. He outgeneraled his opponents, and, in addition, his stroke work was a model of precise accuracy. It was in the doubles with Mclnnes against P. O’Hara Wood and B. V. Hawthorn that Brookes showed his old mastery. ' In the first set he fought every inch, of the way, placing accurately, volleying with certainty, and serving finely, and in the second set, his overhead shots were not only spectacular, but winners. He only lost one sendee game during tho match.
