LORD MORLEY’S WILL

NO PAPERS TO BE USED FOR BIOGRAPHIES.

Viscount Morley of Blackburn, whose estate has been valued for probate at £59,765, with net personality £51,897. directed in his will that no one should have access to any of his papers for the purpose of writing memoirs of himself or anyone else. The passage in the will containing this direction reads:—

“I give to my nephew. Guy Estell Morley, all my correspondence, diaries, and written fragments, to be dealt with as he may think, fit at . his own discretion, and as it is possible . that some parson may desire to write a memoir of my life, which I regard as wholly superfluous, I enjoin upon niy executors, and each of them, to refuse to aid or encourage any such person to have access to any of my papers, whether personal or acquired in the course of official duty, either for perusal or otherwise. And I also desire that the same refusal of access to my papers shall be extended to persons . writing memoirs or biographies of friends of mine or others.” After instructing . that his ashes should be placed in some spot m Brookwood or other cemctorv without ceremonial or spoken words. Lord Mmley added: “I fain would trust a lingering memory of me to tho silent

hearts of such as have boon, and still remain, my friends.” Subject to Ids wife’s .life interest, he left not -less than 5000 volumes from his library to Manchester University, “such volumes to be placed in the Ashburn Hall for the use of the women students.”
