SHIPPING ORDERS

SUGGESTED CHANGE. ( London, January 16. Shipping men are keenly discussing a suggestion that in the interests of safety in navigation, particularly when a ship is in the charge of a pilot in the narrow seas, the words of command “Right” and “Left” should be substituted for “Starboard” and “Port.” There have been numerous recent accidents traceable to confusion on the bridge in consequence of misinterpretation of an order, or even a wrong order being given. It is pointed out that when a big steamer is proceeding slowly a few turns of the wheel in a wrong direction sets the bows swinging in a manner which cannot quickly be corrected, and almost inevitably means grounding or collision in narrow channels such as the Mersey and the Thames. —Aus.-N.Z.
