A. correspondent at Tokio learns that Sendai, an important market city, was shaken by the violent earthquake. Reports, however, fail to state the extent of the damage. The populace is distraught, and is dreading a recurrence of wide devastation. Professor Nakamura, the eminent earthquake authority, has stated that earthquakes of lesser intensity will be frequent in Japan during the spring. Professor Nakamura regards the disturbances as of volcanic origin, similar to the eruption on September 3 of the volcano on Oshima, an island of the Idzu Peninsula, which, exploded, carrying the entire island into the sea.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. LARGE FISSURES IN GROUND Tokio, January 16. As a result of the earthquake, the Tokaido railway is now only running a single line to Daibutsu. At Kamakura, tho line, which was displaced by being thrust forward by the earthquake of last September, has now been brought backward four inches. Large fissures have been made at Kamakura. The water supply for Yokohama City has been cut off, and vessels in the harbour are supplying water to meet immediate wants. The Yokohama tram service has been suspended. Panic-stricken people are camping out m the streets, where a dense fog hanging over Yokohama made the sun appear crimson. At Yokohama the casualties were thtoe killed and twelve wounded.
