THE NEW SOUTH WALES TOUR SOUTHLAND’S GRIEVANCE AT EXCLUSION STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN OF CRICKET COUNCIL By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, January 16. Interviewed this afternoon concerning Southland’s complaint at not being included in the itinerary of the New South Wales team’s tour, Mr. J. bBarrett, chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council, said: “In view of the dissatisfaction expressed by various associations at their failing to obtain a match against the visitorsthe htanagement Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council has asked me to make the following statement: ‘The last Australian tour was marred by bitter and, I fear, justified complaints of the visitors at. the amount of travelling required in order to play, against minor associations and this complaint was publically expressed bv both Vernon and Ransford and Mr. T. Howard at the conclusion of the tour. The itinerary as framed entails as much travelling as the visitors can b© reasonably asked to undertake, and at the. conclusion of the Wellington match it is too much to ask the team to journey from Wellington to Invercargill and play the next day. The scheme suggested, by Southland makes the matches against Otago and Canterbury begin on Saturday, which is not satisfactory from a financial point of view, and finance cannot be ignored. The whole trouble is that the tour is so short that so me " one must go without a match. There are eighteen minor associations affiliated, most of whom desire a match during every tour. To show that the Management Committee does not neglect the minor associations I may state that Mr. Wynyard’s team was hero fourteen weeks and played sixteen matches, of which five were against minor associations. This tour is of seven weeks’ duration,. playing twelve matches, of. which six are against minor associations. Southland has been well treated in the past, having had a match during three tours in succession. The association with a real grievance is Poverty Bay, for in spite of their keenness and the desire of the council to help them they have not had a game for two or three tours. Poverty Bay has accepted the inevitable in ’ a truly sporting spirit and I am sure other associations which have been omitted will do the same. NEW SOUTH WALES TOURING TEAM A STRONG BATTING SIDE. Sydney, January 16. Idle cricket team to tour New Zealland is to sail on February 2. It comprises C. G. Macartney (captain), W. Bardsley, R. Bardsley. T. J. E. Andrews, A. F. Kippax, A. Mailey, W. A. Oldfield. H. L. Hendry, A. Punch, Mullakey. Ratcliffe, and S. Everett. Nine of the foregoing are included in the team to meet Victoria cn January 25. The side is especially strong in batting.—Press Assn. • AUSTRALIAN TEAMS’ AVERAGES The averages of members of the New South Wales team in inter-State matches this season to date are: BATTING.

WELLINGTON LEAGUE Wellington League fixtures for January 19 are:—l.B.C. v. Brymay, Hannah and Co. v. Defence Department, Tramways v. G.P.O. All at Kilbirnie Reserve. MANAWATU V. NELSON By Thlegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, January 16. In a match with Manawatu on a dead wicket, the Nelson eleven to-day compiled 223 (Saxon 59, Langheen 43, Hawkes 44). Gallichan took three wickets for 41 runs; Mullips» two for 20; Rose, one for 6. Manawatu scored 79 for no wickots (Hodder not out 59, Lye not out 16). The match will be continued to-morrow. “STORM IN A TEACUP” Sydney January 16. It is understood that the squabble over afternoon tea at the Sheffield Shield cricket match was due to an ovei sight on the part of the caterer. The suggestion of a strike on the part of the New South Wales team in the event of Collins being dealt with by the authorities for the words used to Mr. Tyler treasurer of the association, is scouted by those in authoritative quarters, who' declare that it is merely a storm in a tea cup as well as over one. —Press Assn.
