OBITUARY

DR. E. D. MACKELLAR

The death of Dr. Edward Duncan MacKellar, at the age of 76, is announced in a Press Association message from Auckland. , Figuratively speaking, the late Dr. MacKellar was dean of the medical profession in Auckland, and his practice was the oldest established in that city. Bom in Argyllshire, Dr. MacKellar was educated at Edinburgh and at Glasgow, where he was associated with Lord Lester in some of the latter’s discoveries. After studying at ' Paris and in Germany lie returned to Glasgow, being appointed assistant to Professor Allen Thompson, a leading anatomist of the day. Subsequently he investigated plague conditions in India for three years, but a severs malaria), affection necessitated his removal to New Zealand. He arrived in the Dominion about forty years ago, and was offered the Chair of Anatomy at Otago University, but he declined the position and entered into private practice. Before coming to Auckland 30 or 35 years ago, Dr. MacKellar was superintendent of Wellington Hospital. He was at one time a member of the Auckland University College Council and of the Board of Governors of St. John’s College, Tamaki He was an accomplished linguist, his attainments extending to ancient Oriental and modern languages.
