WELLINGTON WOOL SALE

ALL ROUND ADVANCES VALUES UP TO COMMANDEER PRICES The Wellington wool sale which commenced on Tuesday was concluded yesterday afternoon, and from first to last a strong tone prevailed and values all round were well above the December sales rates. The competition was keen at every sitting and, as stated yesterday/ some extreme prices were obtained.

A very large percentage of the offerings sold under the hammer, in toot the withdrawals were limited. that there were any withdrawals was surprising, in view of the handsome prices realised, but there always will be growers with inflated ideas of values. The quantity offered was 32,290 bales, or 7295 bales more than at the January sale last year, and the catalogues of the several selling firms were as follow: — Jan., Jan., 19M. 1923. Bales Bales Dalpety and Co 4.620 N.Z.F. Dist. Co 3.672 3/00 Levin and Co•• 8.153 5,700 Murray. Roberts and Co. and . Johnston and Co. 5.199 4,0/u Writihl. The Dominion mills and Bradford were the principal operators for merino wools. Halfbreds—The market was extremely firm for this grade <**ool, and the local mills bought all the best qualities, but they had to submit to very keen competition from overseas buyers. The prices paid for halfbr«d wool were equal to the prices recently ruling for merino, for as high as 28<L was paid for Southdown wool, or 2d. more than the current rates at the last sale. Fine Crossbreds.—American operators held their own for this class of wool, although Bradford and the Continent offered strong competition for the super qualities; for the average grades the Continent and Bradford competed on equal terms. The most marked advance was in the lower grades—44’s—most of this wool going to Bradford and tho Continant. Hogget wool sold as well as at any previous sale, good prices wore ed for 46/48’s, and_lB|d. and 19$d. were frequently obtained. Lambs wool was rushed not only by France, but also by the. representatives of the Dominion mills. An unusual feature was to find America competing keenly, with Bradford coming in occasionally. , Bellies and pieces met with good competition and sold freely. Local scourers found the prices too high and most of this wool was taken for exP °'l'he prices realised yesterday were well up to commandeer prices, except for Lincoln wool, which made. up to 13Jd., while the commandeer pnee was about 14d. . . . MURRAY, ROBERTS, AND CO. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. report :—Tho exceedingly dry Season has caused such a rush of wool to the port that the allotted quantity of 32,000 bales for the Wellington January sale was in store before the Christmas holidays, and consequently many growers who anticipated their clips in this sale are disappointed and must await tlte February sale. V ith .a limit of 3500 lots for one sale, it is almost an impossibility te catalogue more than about 30,000 bales at ono time, and when farmers come to realise that the limit imposed is acting in their own interest by stopping a glut of offerings and giving buyers reasonable time to adequately examine and value the wool, they will look on the question of limitation in a- different light. From the outset of the salo bidding was free, at many times very keen, and fairly well distributed.

Bradford was well to the fore, and was a heavy purchaser, with the Continent in free competition for all wools suitable for them, and with appal- . ently plastic limits on such lots. Our catalogue of 5199 hales contained some very attractive wools, coming from Wairarapa. Manawatu, Rangitikei, and Marlborough, besides some wools from Gisborne district. On the whole the wool was in fairly light condition, although in many cases tender, some lots showing shortness of staple. _ Piripiri seed was hardly so freely noticeable as might have been expected in so dry a season, although some otherwise good wools showed it. AVe offered some verv nice lines of soft handling lambs’ wool, and these elicited keen competition from th'e French section, who were also keenly interested in good pieces and skirtings in competition with the other Continental buyers. Australian and New Zealand woollen mills were also keen buyers of lambs’ wool, and th ■ New Zealond mills competed freely for merino and halfbred wools. We sold about 94 per cent, of our catalogue under the hammer and we anticipate clearing the few passed lots shortly. Compared with last December sale, merino advanced Id. to 2d., fine halfbred about 3d., medium halfbted 14d. to 2d., and coarse halfbred or threequarter bred 2d. to 23d. Fine crossbreds show an advance of lfd. to 2d., medium crossbred 13d., and coarse and low crossbred 2d. to 23d. Lambs wool showed a substantial advance of from 3|d. to 4d. per lb. : pieces and skirtings on the average about 2d. advance. Altogether the sale may be said to be eminently satisfactory. LOAN AND MERCANTILE. Reporting on the sale, the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile state: — “The selection of wool was a good one, clips being light in condition and of bright and attractive appearance. It is very evident that growers need to pay more attention to the breeding of their wools. Many lots of bright, light-conditioned wools were found, on examination, to lack that “soft handle” which is so much desired by the trade. This can only be obtained by careful and scientific breeding. It is greatly to the grower’s advantage to breed a wccl of merit, so that he obtains the full competition of the sate room, ant! consequently secures enhanced returns. America was a keen purchaser for suitable lots, but the bulk of the offering was purchased on Bradford account. Continental demand was hardly so strong, and this may be due to the unsatisfactory state of foreign exchanges. They are still operating on suitable wools, but the demand on their account is hardly so general. Local mills were not such active competitors, and it would appear that overseas buyers are o]>erating at much higher “limits” than the local trade feels prepared to pay. Still, it is evident that they are' not yet fully stocked and must in the near future make their presence in the sale loom really felt. Merinos were in very keen demand, and ruled at extreme rates. All previous records have been exceeded, and for the first time at Dominion selling

BROKERS’ REPORTS

centres, local mills have had to be content with second place. The demand on Bradford account was exceptional, and up to 33d. was paid for superior wools, winch easily constitutes a New Zealand record. Halfbreds met with good competition, and the demand was general. America, Bradford, France, and local mills were keen competitors, and values can bo quoted from a penny to twopence higher than last Wellington sales ruling rates. Competition for Romney and low-quality wools, which were in very good condition, was keen and sustained, and prices realised were quite on a parity with recent sales. Values show a considerable increase on last Wellington sale, more especially in wools of 44’s quality and below, and which can be quoted a penny to twopence dearer. Improved limits received by Bradford purchasers-enabled them to “lift” the bulk of these wools. Pieces and oddments were not of good quality, many lots containing coarse britch ends and consequently prices, except for a few good parcels, w-ere hardly equal to those realised at recent sales. Stillj ■ a considerable advance was shown on last Wellington sale rates., and competition was general at an increase in values of a penny to twopence. The demand for lambs, whev free from seed, was exceptional. Erance and local mills were keen competitors, the former securing the bulk of the offering at prices that showed an advance on the recent level of values Our catalogue, which, contained some very attractive parcels, received a good reception at the hands of the buyers, and although the last to be offered, met with keen competition throughout. With the exception of a few lots carrying owners reserves which were above current values, wc sold the whole of the offering at eminently satisfactory prices. All the clips reclassed by us in store were well conir peted for, and sold at prices that amply justify the cost of preparation. Our binned wool, which is composed of contents of odd bales, mixed bales and bags carefully graded into their lespective ’ots.'met with remarkable reception from buyers, and prices realised were highly satisfactory

WAIRARAPA FARMERS.

The Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operac five Association, Ltd., report as follows :—We offered a catalogue of 2640 bales, comprising some excellent clips, the bulk being from the Wairarapa and Dannevirke districts, and a portion from Manawatu and districts surrounding Wellington. Tho wool opened up in excellent condition, and we disposed of practically the whole of our catalogue under the hammer. Bidding, although deliberate, was well sustained at a high range pf values. Compared with previous Wellington sale held on December 7. fine crossbreds

were higher by IJd. to 2d. per lb.; medium crossbreds, higher by 1-Jd. per lb.; and coarse and low crossbreds were higher by 2d. to 2Jd. per lb. Lambs’ wool was probably higher bv 4d. to M. per ilb.; pieces and bellies, which excited considerable competition, about 2d. per lb. higher. The sale was probably one of the most successful held heio. The improvement in prices of coarse and low crossbreds is a boon to the smaller growers. We made some very high prices for crossbred wool, among others super fine crossbred, • LWW (reclassed), 203 d.; Tawhero, crossbred, 183 d.; Annedale, crossbred, 18d.; Tuturewa, crossbred. 18d. For lambs’ wool we obtained 23Jd. for JWS/l’uturewa, HK/Otawhao and Annedale brands. For crossbred pieces the excellent price of 18Jd. was obtained for 4 bales of Tawhero and 173 d. for 9 bales of Annedale. Johnston and Co., Ltd., report as follow:—Our catalogue comprised _ a good selection, fully representative of the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Dannevirke and Marlborough districts, lhe bulk of our offering was well grown, bright and lustrous in appearance, light in condition, but if anything more generous in condition than the wools offered at the December sale. Crossbreds have at last come into their own, which after a long steady improvement in values. ’The appreciation which has taken place in tho fine dualities is more pronounced in the medium and coarser grades. Bradford set the main on all grades of crossbreds, closely followed by the Continent. Super sorts and hoggets were bought freely by the former. America was operating, but not at all freely, principally on super Romneys, halfbreds and in a few lots of super merinos. Local mills and Bradford competed keenly for all lines of halfbreds and merinos. A noticeable feature of the sale was tho strong French competition for all good and super parcels of lambs wool and pieces. Prices current at the Wanganui and Napier sales which have just been held 15.r0 also maintained here, low and coarse crossbreds being if anything a shade dearer than at Wanganui. Compared with the Wellington December sale halfbreds are 23d. to 3d. dearer; super crossbreds are l|d. dearer: low and coarse crossbreds a good 2d. dearer; good to super lambs are 3d. to 33d. dearer: good to super bellies and pieces 2d..,t0 2Jd. dearer.
