GERMAN SEAMEN STRIKE
BRITISH RATES OF PAY SOUGHT. London, January 9. A German steamer is held up in the Victoria Docks owing to the crew striking for British rates of pay. She is the Hamburg-America liner Frankenwald. which arrived on December 15 last. Officials of the new Stevedores’ and Lightermen’s Union visited the Frankenwald to-day to ascertain whether members of the union are handling cargo, in order to call them out immediately. They retired when they found the cargo-handlers belonged to the Transport Workers’ Union. German pickets at Hull awaited the arrival of the steamer Herbert Fischer, from Germany, and induced the crew of 19 to join the strike. The result of the negotiations of the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union at Hull with the agents of the German steamer Neptune is that the latter have agreed to pay the crew the British maritime rate from January 3, and have accepted all the conditions of the Maritime Board. —Reuter. 4
