THE RACING WORLD

TAKAPUNA MEETING CONCLUDED LOYAL IRISH WINS ST. ANDREW’S HANDICAP f HANDICAPS FOR AUCKLAND CUP AND RAILWAY HANDICAP Week-end racing was confined to the final day’s events at Takapuna and the trotting meeting at Forbury. At Takapuna the St. Andrew’s Handicap provided a fine finish, Loyal Irish getting the decision over Tinohoro; Gold Rain won by a neck from Cool Stimulants in the Welter Handicap and the overdue Alfort scored in the Cautley Handicap. The chief event at the Forbury meeting (the Forbury Cup) was robbed of much of its interest through one of the competitors falling and bringing down six other competitors.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”)

The summer meeting of the Woodville Club will bo held on Wednesday and Thursday. The annual race meetings of the Bay of Plenty and Methven clubs will be held on Saturday.

Nominations for the Christmas meeting of the Taranaki Jockev Club wall close to-dav at 8.30 p.m.

Nominations for all events at the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting and l first forfeits for the eighteenth Palmerston North Stakes are due tomorrow at 9 p.m.

T. Oninlivan’s team for Auckland, consisting of Quest. Scion. Ge.zeworthy and Roval Divorce, leave on the first stage of their iourney to-day. being taken to Woodville, whore they are down to compete at the summer meeting.

The .Trentham-trained Bright Dyes, Ares and Lake Urn figure amongst the entrants for handicap events at thfe Auckland Cup meeting.

Mr. V. Riddii ford’s English filly Merit will be taken to Woodville todav bv 8. Reid.

In several cases at Eeilding the fields were too unwieldly for the track, and this did not permit of everything •having an eaual chance in the race. Some of the runners who failed there will be doing bettier during the holiday meetings. This particularly applies to slow beginners and long striding horses like Demand. Black Cruiser, Pantagruel. and others.

Listowel’s win at Eeilding was his first since the Wanganui .winter meeting in Mav. 1921. when he wop the Empire Handicap. ; He was a good three-vear-old. winning seven races, but he met with an accident when racing at Ellerslie, and went through the next two seasons without a win, while he was placed only four times, twice second and twice third. This season, prior to Eeilding. h'e had contested eight races, including hurdles, at the Wanganui spring meeting, where he was second to Lochson. _ This may have given him some of his lost confidence. for he has beten gradually improving since then, and ran well at Trentham in the Wainui Handicap, in which he was favourite, finishing close up fourth. He spreadeagled his field on Wednesday last, after being left at the post, and his dividend was the best of the meeting. In the Colyton Handicap on Friday, he did not get too good a run in the straight, but he should have done better than last place, considering he was up with the leaders at the top of the stretch. Listowel apparently likes plenty of room and will not do his best with horses round him. At a. sale of thoroughbred horses in Feilding on Friday, on account of the O’Neill Estate. Orchid realised 350 guineas. (Radiole, with a colt at foot, and served bv Arrowsmith, 205 guineas : a three-vear-old gelding by Hallowmas —Gladiole. 300 guineas ; and the brood mare Arras (Birkenhead —Epilogue). 50 guineas. The sales were all made to members of the family. Thfc track at Feilding was very hard 1 , and this probably accounted for some of the indifferent jumping seen in the hurdles. Santiago would have done better on a softer course.

Good Snort finished fourth in each of his races at Feilding. and should be in good order for the holiday racing. Santonio ran a good race in the Colyton Handicap at Feilding. showing considerable improvement on his Ashhurst finishing effort, but had to admit defeat bv a good one in Ngata, and also iust failed to concede Snatcher a stone. Santonio should not be lone in again running prominently. The race won by Anticipate at Feilding was named the Novice Stakes, but the half-brother to Mark Time is no novice at the art of galloping, and will win in much better company before he is much older.

Demand is improving, and ran a good race on Friday in thb Manchester Handicap.

Now that Zouave has learn to lead his field home in a big handicap, he mav be seen doing it again in the near future. The change of riders at Feilding had the desired effect, and it will lie remembered last season that he ran most generously for H. Gilmer, but would not gnlloo for others. There w?s a bit of bad hick attached to his failure the first day. but his wine on Friday wn,s decisive, and ho should bring a, bit more luck to the stable, which deserves it all. Zouave is amongst thostf engaged at Ellerslie, but it looks as if the Manawatu Cup might bo easier for him.

Helen Rufus did such a scratchy preliminary for the Manchester Handicap on Friday, that, despite the fact that, she had the services of young Bagbv. she was the rank outsider of the field. She was fractious at the post, tailed the field turning into the straight and from there simply flew home. With a longer run in she would have been closer than third, and she is .worth noting for a good handicap in the near future.

Pahiatiia. Ashhurst, and Feilding all saw races lost through. indifferent handling of mounts. While the giving of the ride to a lad employed in the stable is commendable, the experience born of freauent failures should convince owners and trainers that it is mistaken lovaltv in not standing down r.n inexperienced rider, particularly in a big handicap. In one particular inrttanco the horse was the public choice, and backers deserved a better run than thev rot- . It is reported from Taranaki that Reremoana has gone amiss, which is hard luck for his connection!), as he promised to be amongst the leaping three-year-olds, up to- >X mile at leant.

Allmarimba and Sunny Vale were unlucky on the concluding day at Eeilding. Sunny Vale got stopped very early in the race, but Allmarimba struck his trouble in the run home, being unable to get clear of the ruck. Civility is staying on - better as the season advances, and such a quick beginner is at a groat advantage in.big fields. In the, Nikau Hack Handicap on Friday she was bowling along Jn front, while Sunny Vale, Cushat, and ethers were getting into all sorts of trouble in the ruck behind her. Black Ronald has done well in his preparation for the Great Northern Derby, and he will strip a much improved horse to the one that won at Riccarton last month. Hazleman realises that ho has a much harder proposition in front of him at Ellerslie, and if Black Ronald is beaten, if will not be on the score of condition. F. Waddell came across from Hastings to ride Bagdad at Feilding, and he says that Razzle Dazzle has thrown off all signs of soreness, and is as sound as’could l be wished for her Ellerslie engagements. Gold Light, Razzle Dazble. King’s Folly, "and Penclephon will be at Woodville this week, but it is not intended to take the last-named through to Auckland. The trainers of all three leading two-year-olds Inferno' Killocra, and Motley were at Feilding, and all expressed themselves in terms of satisfaction as to the manner in which their charges were progressing in view of the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Mr. Currie, who owns Motley, says that he has looked upon Enitaph as the speediest two-year-old sired by Absurd, but he thinks that Motley will prove herself as good, if not superior.

Rational was sent home after his failure in the Feilding Stakes, and did not wait for the Oroua Stakes tho second day. Since Wanganui his connections have experienced a run of bad luck with him. The last foal to be dropped at Mr. Currie’s stud, this season was a full brother to Rational and The Monk.

Through the two wins secured by Tamatete. Mr. W. McA. Duncan headed the list of winning owners at the Feilding spring meeting with £640. File victory of Kareab in the St. Andrew’s Handicap placed Mr. F. S. Bluett second with £350. 'and those who won over £lOO were, next in order: Mr. G. Currie £275; Mr. O. E. Elgar, £260; Mr. E. J. Murtagh, £280: Messrs. G. F. Moore, J. Bull, and W. Patterson, £175 each; Mr. H. Rayner, 43170; Mr. H. L. Russell, £160: Messrs. W. Pine. E. L. Barnes, and C. L. Ferguson. £125; Mr. J. B. Gaisford, £lO5. Winning jockeys at the fixture were: M. McUarten and L. G. Morris, three each; J. Barry and P. Holman, two each: and one winner each by the following:—M. Mackie, D. Gunn, A. Reed. L. A. Pine, P. Rayner, and H. Dunn.
