VOLSTEAD ACT
EFFORTS TO AMEND IT “A SAFE LEGAL DRINK” (Req. December 2, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, November 30. There are indications that serious efforts to amend the Volstead Act will bo made during the coming session of Congress. This intimation is contained in an announcement that Representative Dyer,- the Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, will introduce a measure legalising beverages containing 2.75 per cent, of alcohol. Mr. Dyer indicated that there is abundant scientific proof that such beverages are nonintoxicating. Ho predicated that 75 per cent, of those now drinking bootleg liquor would imbibe Iho Safe legal drink. Mr. Dyer is holding .a safe strategic- position, because of his membership of au important committee. He ;s desirous of enforcing prohibition and will introduce a measure providing for the deportation of aliens violating the prohibition law.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
