CITY COUNCIL

LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. All the members of the City Council were present at last night’s meeting, tlie Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) presiding. Th© Mayor introduced Mr. G. Carter, M.P. of the Queensland Legislature and aiderman of tlie City of Brisbane. to tho councillors, and invited, him to take a seat on the dais. It was decided not to run trams on Christmas Day, when the tramways employees’ annual picnic will b© held, except for the picnic. The Tramways Committee reported that in connection with the question of improved access to Wellington Terrace, tho council’s officers had been instructed to bring down a report embodying conditions bv which any private concern may be allowed 1 to undertake th© proposed Construction of a lift to meet the requirements of the district. Tho Abattoirs Committee reported that tho fees paid an October totalled £925 13s. 4d., an increase of over £B7 on the previous month, and of £176 on the same month last year. The stock slaughtered were: —191 cows, 897 bullocks, 1 bull. 5340 sheep, 922 lambs, 94 calves, and 90 pigs. Of these 4 cows. 7 bullocks, 24 sheep, and 6 pigs had been condemned. The Tramways Committee reported that it had received a resolution from the Labour Representation Committee, urging that the fullest consideration be given to the necessity of making th© width of the proposed Ellice Street tunnel such as would cope with th© rapidly growing requirements of city traffic. Th© matter had been referred to the Works Committe© for consideration. The Mayor said that the site of the tunnel had been definitely decided upon by the council. A recommendation of the Finance Committee that provision bo made in next year’s estimates for the ernijtion of a new mess-room for the employees at th© corporation yard, was agreed to. Mr. R. Brown was appointed assistant caretaker at the central library. The Libraries Committee reported that, with its approval, the chief librarian had been appointed to the Book Censorship Appeal Board.

Councillor Burns drew attention to the mutilation of books in the public libraries, and said that the committee would like anyone who discovered anything of th© sort to report the fact to the officials.

It was decided to agree to the resolutions passed at the last meeting of the Hutt Road Board of Control. At the request of Councillor Chapman. it was decided! to obtain from the citv treasurer specimen cases showing the effect of levying rates on the unimproved value, the annual value, and. tho capital value. In reply to Councillor Meadowcroft, the Mavor stated that certain small repairs in Mount Street were to be done, but although land had been taken for the deviation, it was impossible to carry the work to completion at present.
