HUTT ROAD WORK

TWO TENDERS RECEIVED Two tenders have been received for the permanent paving of a central strip of the Hutt Road with bituminous asphalt—one from the City Council itself and one from an Australian firm. They are to be considered by the Hutt Road Board on Monday.

Air. E. Parker waited on the City Council last night to say a few words in regard to the tender his company .had put in for the work. The problem confronting New Zealand to-day in regard to roads, he said, was similar to that in Canada and the United States fifteen years ago. He explained what had happened since then and the successful result of treating roadconstruction. His firm had offered to •guarantee the road for five years and would give a bond to back up the guarantee. Tho idea of making the proposition was to ensure that the road would be turned over to the council at the end of five years thoroughly proved and sound, without weak spots. Tho road they offered, that was, one constructed on the existing road, would be as good as, if not better, than a new road and the cost would be very much less. After Mr. Parker had withdrawn the Mayor explained to the council that there were only two tenderers for the Hutt Road —tho City Council and the firm Mr. Parker represented. The City Council’s tender was m areotdance with suggestions made by their officers twelve months ago, so that the two. tenders were on exactly the same footing. The whole matter would have to lie considered later on.
