BOARD OF GOVERNORS MEETS.
Tho monthly meeting of the Wellington College Board of Governors was held yesterday. Mr. W. F. Ward presided. ' The report of the headmaster of the boys’ college for November showed a roll number of 729, with_ an average attendance of 694, or 95.2 per cent. One hundred and fifty-seven pupils had been granted senior free places, while some 16 would probably be given an extension of the junior free places. Forty-four boys had been recommended for higher leaving certificates, *which carried valuable privileges at a university college. Tho new buildings were reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The head teacher of the girls’ college reported! a roll number of 737, with an average attendance of 698. or 95 per cent. It was suggested that the governors’ bursaries, four in number. of the value of £7 10s. each, be given again this year to enable deserving girls to have a year longer at school. —The board decided not to give any more bursaries, as the finances would not permit it. It was also reported that tho girls college was short of three class-rooms, and it would be necessary to refuse pupils next year unless further accommodation was provided.—lt was decided to make arrangements for securing the hall in Svdnev Street. Tho board approved of the architect’s plans for tho proposed new building for the girls’ college, and the architects were authorised to call for tenders as soon as practicable. The following motion was carried unanimously:—“That the board viqws with concern the condition of the mam building of Wellington College., and draws the Department’s attention to the fact that it cannot exist for many more rears, and on early provision for rebuilding is necessary, as. however soon the building is started, it would be some time • before it is ready for occupation.”
