DAIRY CONTROL BOARD

f COUNCIL’S NOMINATION OF TICKET WHY A LEAD WAS GIVEN Mr. W. Grounds, chairman of the Dairy Council, when approached with reference to the criticism from various quarters icgarding the nomination of a ticket for the Dairy Control Board, made the following statement: — _ “In the multitude of nominations for the Control Board, thoughtful dairymen will see a full justification for the action of the Dairy Council in selecting six nominees representative of the industry in the various provinces of the North Island and commending them to dairy farmers. It should be remembered that the Dairy Council was elected at a meeting of the industry in Wellington in September, 1922. All factories in the country had been invited to send representatives, to which most of them responded. When elected the council were instructed by the meeting to secure the passing of a Bill for the industry, on tho lines of the Meat Export Control Act. Nominally the task of the council had been accomplished, when the Act was accepted by producers at the recent referendum. “With, a full sense of their responsibility, which involved a recognition of the fact that the final success of the measure depended almost entirely upon the tact and good sense wiith which the many problems of control were approached, they believed it to be their duty to consider the qualifications of those available and make recommendations to the industry. I found that the need for this was plainly recognised by thoughtful dairymen in every province when on the recent referendum campaign. On manv occasions men .said to me: ‘How shall we know who to vote for when the board is elected; we shall look to you for a lead.’

“We have given that lead, not with anv idea of securing appointments for individuals, but in an earnest desire to secure for the industry and the country the advantages we know the measure will yield if wisely administered.”
