LADY PASSENGER MISSING

SENSATION ON MARAMA BODY REPORTED AS SEEN ' IN WATER The discovery that a woman had disappeared from the Union Company's Marama early yesterday morning created a sensation aboard the ship, which has just arrived from Sydney.

Mary Ellen Moran, a single woman, aged 30, of medium height, and a brunette-, was last seen alive at about 630 o’clock yesterday. The Marama was off Seatoun at the time, and Miss Moran, with her two sisters, were standing outside their cabin in a passageway. The three sisters were fully Pressed, and while drinking tea wore watching tho shore from an adjacent porthole. Miss Moran was found to be missing when tho passengers assembled for the usual medical inspection. The ship was thoroughly searched, but there was no sign of her. Although she had suffered from indifferent health, and had taken a holiday trip to Australia for health reasons, Miss Moran appeared to l>o in excellent spirits in the company of her sisters yesterday morning. Sho expressed gladness at coming home. Her mother, and another’sister were waiting to greet her on tho wharf. The Union Company’s ferry steamer Mararoa. when she berthed at il-o Ferry Wharf from Lyttelton yesterday 'morning, reported that what appeared to be a floating body was sighted off Kau Point, in the vicinity of Karaka Bay, about a quarter of a mile from tho shore. An exhaustive search was made by the police throughout the day, but without result. The Government steamer Janio Seddon went out to the Heads at about 11 o’clock and returned two hours later. Meanwhile a search was carried out along the neighbouring waterfront. Tho search will bo continued to-day. Miss Moran resided at 15 Bidwell Street, and before leaving for Australia was employed by the Internal Affairs Department.
