WIRELESS RECORD
REMARKABLY LOW POWER USED. Sydney, October 6. A world wireless record is claimed for an achievement by Mr. Charles MacLurcan, of Strathfield, who has communicated with Mr. F. D. Bell, of Waihemo, Shag Valley (New Zealand), using only .0037 watt, which is merely a small fraction of the power required for lighting the tail-lamp of a motorcar.—Press Assn.
[Confirmation of the correctness of the feat accomplished by Mr. MacLurcan has been received in Wellington in a letter from Mr. F. D. Bell, of Waihemo. The amount of power used by Mr. MacLurcan may be cbmpared with that required for a diminutive electric pocket torch. Mr. MacLurcan sent liis message on a short _ wavelength—about 200 metres _and, instead of employing the usual 500 to _ 600 volts on the plate of his transmitting tube used onlv 15 volts. For some considerable timelie has been experimenting in transmitting Morse code while operating his power valves below their rated filament and plate voltage. Over twelve months ago Mr. MacLurcan, using continuous wave and 8.25 watts power was heard nt Darwin, 2100 miles from Sydney, by Mr. Dixon on the s.s. Montoro, using only one valve to receive the Morse signals. This latest feat completely dwarfs all previous records.]
