PORT STATISTICS
At present there is a determined effort being made by people interested to revert to the old misleading and unfair method of port returns, under which Wellington was deprived of credit for nearly half her exports, while other ports were credited with exports which never went near their ports, says a report 'of the Central Progress League. There is certainly a just claim for a district production return whereby each district will be given credit for the goods it produces, and the coastal shipping of small ports should also bo shown, but any attempt to return to the old system must and will be strenuously fought by our people. Not only is the present system sound and just to each port, but, as pointed out to your secretary by a prominent British trader now visiting the Dominion, they are the source of very valuable information to those trading with our Dominion, and must not be altered to. a false basis to satisfy a few people interested and mislead so many.
