HOW AUCKLAND GAINS

PUBLIC WORKS AND PRESS PUBLICITY

“Ono outstanding feature of my tour of the northern province was. the continued and well-organised publicity given by the daily Press to tho Auckland Province,” declared the president of the Central Progress League (Mr. P. C. Watt) in a report to that body last night. “Every possible advantage and progress in the district is thoroughly and rightly stressed by • the Press, and thereby the notable public spirit and provincial prido in their fine district is stimulated.’’

“The reason why Auckland has so few unemployed is attributed to the Very large amount of money expended and circulated on public works,” said the secretary (Mr. G. Mitchell). “I have already published the figures and kept them up to date each year. The fact that they are spending so much money on roads and railways in the Auckland district utilises available labour and circulates money that pays more labour, thus giving a general tone of prosperity to the district that is lacking here in Wellington. The same amount of money is not being spent in the southern part of the island. Not a day passes but the Auckland J?ress are writing up Auckland and the Auckland district. Every little advantage and. every little bit of progress is published, until the people of Auckland not only believe that theirs is the leading city t but the only city in New Zealand. You must admire them—people and Press are boosting their district along.” (Hear, hear.)
