BIG CATTLE DEAL

FAT BULLOCKS FOR AUSTRALIA TWO SHIPMENTS TO LEAVE AT ONCE UNION COMPANY VESSEL CHARTERED

From meagre first-hand information, facts have been pieced together which disclose that big cattle deals are going on for the purpose of working up a winter trade to supply the Australian market. A ship of 8000 tons is being put into commission immediately by the Union Company and will make two trips.

A Victorian cattle buyer, Mr. Keith McLean, of Gippsland. has been operating actively in various parts of the Wellington province and as far north as Taihape. It is learned that' to date he has purchased about 1500 fat bullocks at prices that are regarded as verv satisfactory to breeders. Special trains have been engaged to nui from Longburn. Waverley, and Hunterville, each conveying 250 bullocks, which will be loaded at Wellington on June 18 and the morning of June 19 for Melbourne. Among the vendors are the following well-known breeders: —Mr. T. A. Duncan, Hunterville: Mr. Muir, Taihape; Mr. F. Moore, Wanganui; Mr. H. Cameron, Turakina; Mr. H. Gillies, Palmerston North; Mr. C. Gorringe, Palmerston North; Mr. Brice, Hunterville; Mr. W. Duncan, Taihape. It is learned that both the Railway Department 'and the Union Steam Ship Company are doing everything possible to facilitate the transport and shipment, and that an endeavour is being made by Mr. McLean to work up a winter trade in fat bullocks for Australia, if the present trial shipments are satisfactory.
