RENDERED DESTITUTE

IMMIGRANT’S ILL LUCK

£lOO LOST SOON AFTER LANDING

111-luck befell Mr. and Mrs. R. Calvin, who arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Tainui from England. They had taken their six-year old son to the Wellington Hospital with a broken collar-bone, which he sustained through falling between railings of some steps on the ship just after leaving Colon; and while waiting for a tram to return to town about 3.35 p.m., Mr. Calvin left a small attache case, containing about £lOO, on a concrete wall at the junction of Riddiford Street and Adelaide Road. In the hurry to catch an approaching car the case was forgotten until they had travelled abut 50 yards in the tram. The loss was then noticed, and Mr. Calvin jumped off the car while it was moving, and ran back for the case, but it had disappeared. He asked a young man and woman who were standing close by whether they had seen tho case, but they replied in the negative. Nobody else was then in the vicinity. An elimination of the locality failed' to reveal any signs of th© case or monej’. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin stated to a Dominion reporter that the loss of tho £lOO had rendered them destitute. The money was made up of £55 in Bank of England notes (one £2O, two £lO and three £5), and 45 British National Savings Certificates. Duplicates of the latter are in possession of Mr. Calvin, and he can prevent the loss of that amount. The numbers of the missing bank notes are also known by Air. Calvin. Mr. and Airs. Calvin are immigrants, attracted by the possibilities of New Zealand,’and intend settling in Wellington in tho meantime. Air. Calvin is a grocer by trade.
