MAYORAL ELECTION

MR. WRIGHT AT BROOKLYN. Mr. R. A. Wright addressed a meeting at tho Anglican Church Schoolroom, Brooklyn, last night. Mr. M. Thew was in the chair. After dealing with municipal matters generally, Mr. Wright referred to the progress made, at Brooklyn during last winter. Vogcltown Road had been completed to Adams Street, and was a „very fi llo j°b- The road was sufficently wide to permit of tramway construction, and ultimately ta tramlino must be laid down. When it was carried out it would prove a great boon to tho Vogcltown residents, who had been denied tramway facilities for so many years.. He referred also to the park at Tanera Crescent, the levelling of which would be completed in about ten days’ time. -No doubt the Reserves Committee would have the park covereel with turf and grassed during the year. In answer to questions, Mr. Wright said that a duplication of a portion of tho lino .at the Brooklyn.end was very essential, and although the matter had escaped attention, yet he intended to bring it before tho Tramway Committee ask that the work be carried out. In reference to the lack of conveniences at Central Park, he knew this was to be considered when the estimates were being -framed. It was not correct that free passes on tho trams were easily obtainable. As a matter of fact, the council was very conservative indeed about granting free passes, and even Plunket nurses and other social workers were compelled to purchase a special concession ticket. In answer to a further question, Mr. Wright said if he were elected this time he would on no account he a candidate two years hence. He held that" four years was quite a sufficient length of time for one man to occupy the position of Mayor. Asked why he rofitsed to give a. mayoral reception to the Australian League football team, Mr. Wright stated he had made a rule that mayoral receptions were not intended for professional athletes. He had offered to meet the visitors in the Mayor’s room and receive them and welcome them as Australians touring New Zealand, but’this was declined. He was sorry that there had been any irritation over the matter, but as the League footballers were professionals, he felt he had no other alternative. A vote of thanks and confidence in Mr. "Wright was carried by acclamation.

AIR AIcKENZIE’S CAAIPAIGN. At the Newtown Library last evening Councillor L. AlcKenzie addressed an audience of about 250 people. Air. W. A. AVorth presided. Following tho lines of his speeches qt recent meetings, ’Air. AlcKenzie referred to the great work and foresight shown by past Mayors in Sir Francis Bell, the. late Mr. John Duthio, and tho latq Hon. J. G. Aitken. Ho also dwelt on his twelve years’ council experience, and his attitude in upholding sport. He also mentioned that during tho Prince’s visit to New Zealand he was instrumental in inaugurating a football match, and with the assistance of the Rugby Union qjarge sum of inoncy was raised, the proceeds of which were devoted to tho Prince of Wales Park. The first match would bo jJaved on this park this season. Air.. McKenzie referred to the great necessity for hotter mads, particularly A 7 ictoria Street and Tborndon Quay. Referring to the hvdro-elcctric power scheme tho candidate compared tho cTmrtms of Christchurch. Dunedin, and Wellington, and pointed but that in Christchumli. under hvdro-elcetricity. tho householder in sonm respects was not so favoured as in Wellington. The stressed the need for an up-to-date, rard and collection bins in the outlviim districts. After a reference to road construction, transport, tho T-ond for a store and storekeeper, and.
