NAVY LEAGUE
MOVEMENT TO' SAVE NELSON’S FLAGSHIP. Lord Nelson’s flagship in the Battle of Trafalgar, tho Victory, is in grave danger of falling to pieces through the ravages of time. The Society for Nautical Research, which has been entrusted with the preservation of the vessel, is not able to vote any money for carrying out the work, and, accordingly, is making an Empire appeal for funds. Admiral of the Fleet Sir F. C. Doveton Sturdee, as president of tho Society, through Lord Jellicoe, has appealed to New Zealand to do its share in raising funds. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League, a letter received by tho president (Mr J. P. Firth) from the Governor-Gen-eral was read, briefly explaining tho position. The hon. secretary of tho league (Mr. R. Darroch) reported that. )>o had been in communication with r.he president of tho Navy League Conference, and it had been agreed io circularise all branches of tho league in New Zealand soliciting their help in the raising of funds. So far as tho Wellington branch was connei'ned, iiothing definite had yet been decided on.
A suggestion by the chairman (Mr. A. F. Roberts), that as the matter was t. national concern the newspapers nhould be asked to open subscription lists for additions to the “Save-the- \ ic.tory Fund,’’was endorsed by all present, and that course of action was decided on.
