FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE REQUIRED

GRANT FROM CANTEEN FUND SOUGHT

By Telegraph.—Peeks association. Christchurch, April 11. At a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Patriotic Fund, Mr. W. E. Leadley said that the Returned Soldiers’ Association was endeavouring to obtain a grant of £lOOO from the Canteen and Regimental Funds Trust Board, not for the use of tho R.S.A., but to be ear-marked for the financial assistance of - men who had not been accepted by the Defence Department as its responsibility. It was proposed that the grant, if made, should be administered by the patriotic committee. There were at present four or five men in the Cashmere Sanatorium who had been kept there for twelve months, receiving treatment for T.B. Those men were unable to satisfy -the Department that their disabilities were due to war service. Some of them had supplied medical certificates that their trouble did arise as the result of active service, but official help' was withheld for the reason that there was no record on the 'medical files. The men were in a bad pliglrt and would havo to pay for their j?wn treatment, although they received no pnsion. The Canteen Board at present held funds which produced an annual income of £B4OO. Ho would ask the committee to accept tho money and administer it. Mr. J. C. Prudhoe suggested that application shoukl be. made for an annual grant-. In .many cases there was a strong presunyition that the disabilities of the men were due'to war service. The claim for a portion of tho canteen funds was quite a proper ong to make.
