MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday. There were present Councillors H. D. Atkinson (chairman), A. J. Mackay, W. I. Limbrick, A. R. Edwards, j. Whiteman, and H. Foley. The Railway Department wrote advising that there were no engineering difficulties to be faced in the construction of the overhead Otaihanga bridge, but that the Department would not bear the cost.

In acknowledging a letter from the council asking for a clean-up of the district, the Agricultural Department requested tho council to assist by supplying a list of defaulters. Councillors will be prepared to point out to the inspector properties on which noxious weeds are growing, and to render him all the assistance in their power. Members of the council, in accepting the resignation of the county ranger (Mr. C. C. Griffiths), referred with appreciation to his services to the council.

The Public Works Department acknowledged the council’s application for a subsidy for the proposed bridge at Haywards, and advised that it could not be definitely replied to until the 1923-24 Estimates were compiled. A legal firm wrote asking, in the interests of a client, that the bathing sheds at Plimmerton, alleged to be erected in contravention of the Harbours Act, 1908, be removed. Messrs. Troup and Moore, advised that the matter of improving a dangerous angle of the road at Plimmerton Extension was receiving attention. The clerk’s report for the month ended April 10 showed that the credit balance at March 31 was £3671 ss. Id. and after accounts had been paid the credit balance would be £2826 18s JOd. A comparative statement of receipts and expenditure for tho year just ended showed that the annual expenditure on the general account, with the revenue allocated to the ridings, amounted to £14,673, and the receipts oxce-xled +he expenditure by £2122. The total saving on the riding accounts wap £1576, so that there was a saving o’credit to general account of £546, an amount which, considering all circumstances, was considered very satisfactory. It was decided to hold a specia’ meeting next Friday week to dismiss the estimates.

A deputation representing the*' res’ dents of Plimmerton Extension asked if something could not he done by the council to protect the source of the water supply. Because of its unprotected state, they said, the water was being polluted by cattle, etc., and was ft source of great danger to public health. Attention was drawn also to the dangerous state of a portion of the Pukerua, road through the bad drain ago from a swamp. The council was asked to have a drain constructed to enable the water to get away freely. A promise was given that these matters would have favourable consideration. A request that the name of Plimmerton Extension be altered to Karihana is to bo forwarded to the proper authorites with a recommendation that it be acceded to.
