DEAD HEAT IN ALL-AGED STAKES AT AVONDALE ,

TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM

(By The Watcheb.) The autumn meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club will bo concluded to-day. The tracks at Trentham received a thorough soaking on Saturday night and yesterday. They dry quickly, but no more rain is wanted d tl; ey are to be at their very best on Thursday. The Hon. Mrs. Tahu Rhodes’s bay filly Gay Juliet arrived from the .south yesterday, and went out to Irentham. ” She had a good trip up, and was the only hors© to come up yesterday. - Good judges say she was unlucky in th© C.J.C. Champagne Stakes. Sh© is a well-grown two-yo&ir-old, of taking appearance, and claims an engagement in the North Island Challenge Stakes on Thursday. Visiting horses are later than usual In putting in an appearance at headquarters, duo no doubt to tho fact that most of them are well forward with recent racing. Gay Juliet, w'ho arrived yesterday, is the only southerner up so far, but to-morrow or -- Wednesday will see tho rest of them here. R. J. Mason is bringing Pluto, Vespucci, Cupidon, and Parody. H. Cutts will probably bring three horses, land F. D. Jones three. Amongst the expected arrivals.at Trentham to-day are S. Waddell (Gold Light and Bodyguard), M. Thomas (Civilform and Haurangi), R- Gooseman (The Sneaker and Golden Light), T. Higgins (one), and D. Kemp (ono). Mr. W. R. Kemball has reserved accommodation for seven horses. The Martian—Black Ada colt in T. Lloyd’s stable has been named Clanidhu. He had his first spin on a track on Saturday morning, and moved pleasingly. He is a particularly wellmuscled customer, a typical Martian, and with a little experience must bo heard of.

Mireusonta is limping about at headquarters. He is given plenty of easy •xercise, but hard work cannot be risked. Too much notice, however, need not be taken of the fact that he is lame, for at Feilding, when tho going was to his liking, he went lame to the post, won in good style, and limped in again. Ho is brilliant enough to keep the best busy if the track suits him. Caretaker J. Scott Has tho tracks In good order at Trentham, and m addition has them all well and clearly marked. The trial grass looks well, and will probably bo in use for tho fast work to-morrow morning.

Listening Post, who went amiss recently, is still on the easy list, but he is making steady improvement. Ho will be at Trentham and may not fraee again for some time. Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s team —Cupi'don, Pluto. Vesnucci, and Parody will arrive at Trentham to-morrow.

Manv Kittle will be the only representative of R. W. King’s stable at Trentham. He will leave Christchurch to-morrow night, and after competing in the St. Leger and Gold Cup at Trentham, he will probably go on to Awapuni, where he is engaged in the lAwapuni Gold Cup. Boadicea will come up from Riccarton on Tuesday night. C. Emerson, who usually steers her, may not make th© trip.

Bon Spec, Goldspinner. and Lovefeign are booked to leave Lyttelton tomorrow night. Lovesign ran two good" taces at Riccarton.

H. Cutts will bring three of Sir Georg© Clifford’s, horses to Trentham, Winning Hit. Viewpoint, and Owlscombe, and they will probably go on to Awapuni before returning home. Silver Peak and Laughing Eyes are due on Wednesday morning, in charge of F. W. Ellis. Warhaven and Glenshin© are also booked by th© same boat.

'Although F. I). Jones has arranged Ucaommodation for Mnrihaupo, Urgency, Prosperity, and The Reaver, it Is understood that there is a possibil--1 Ity of him leaving one of them behind.

Mr, E. L. Riddiford’s gelding. Tiger- ‘ ~ land, who brought off a surprise vic- " tory at tho Wairarapa Easter meeting, jumped in good style at Trentham , . pn Saturday, nnd looks well forward jn view of the cross-country season. It would soem that tho luck of the Rlddiford stable is still good, and that in the son of Finland —Tigris they have found a worthy successor to Coalition.

Glenshino, who is cornin' l ' un to take Ji'S place in the First High Weight Handican. got a first nnd a second in the hurdle races nt the C..T.C. Faster meeting. The son of Glenculloch is getting up in years now. but could he produce his old form Iho would be pretty useful at tho weights, and in the company in which he now appears.

EMToaihor Mixture has left one or two useful performers without getting the opportunities of more widely advertised sires. Two of ihis progeny, in Scotch Mixture and Barrier, won races at Easter, and have performed with credit at the East Coast meetings dnrlng the season. When in form, another of his sons. Bonny Heather, is more than -nse'til. as natrons of the ... Wellington 'Racing Club’s meetings are ... aware, Scotch Mixture, who claims a double engagement o:n Thursday,, is a five-year-old geld ng from Tapora. by Gazelev from T.adv Cuisine, by Cuirassier from Ladybird. TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM Saturday, April 7. There was quits a nip in ths air this morning, and when the tracks wore opened a heavy mist obscured tho course. It soon dispersed, however, and later a wand sprang up from tho north-west, and it became much warmer.

Only a handful of visiting horses have put in an appear ance so far, and most of them were restricted to strong pacing. Thero wns not much fast work detoe. Tlhj?/ .available were the new grass and tho tan, both of which were in good order. Except Where mentioned the work was done on th 3 grass. J. H. .Telford wns tho first to get going, but al] his team were restrict'd io steady work. Rapine, after doing ■> couple of circuits on the grass, finMied nn with a similar task on tho Van. Grotesque, who looks fresh and Well , was worked on the grass. Arcs and Ralston went six furlongs

in Imin. 18sec., Militate© and Bright Eyes following in a tick under that time. Laughing Stock and Blue Socks did the last four of five furlongs in ulsec., tho latter moving well.

Solfanello and Blackmail wore sent a mile. In the last furlong Solfane.lo appeared to be winning comfortably, but the mare ran up to him in the run home, and they finished on terms in Imin. 44sec. Vindictive galloped a mile alone in Imin. 44sec.

Dainty Step did steady woik. Astinome ran four furlongs m .50 sec., Maun and Kamehameha taking 50 4-ssec.

Sunart, with his trainer in the saddle, was restricted to steady pacing on the tan. Ho was very fresh and anxious to get going.

Mireusonta was given exercise in the lead. He is still lame and cannot be given much work. Tigerland (MoSweeney) . was sent over the three big fences in the back stretch, galloping well and jumping in good stvle. Returning he repeated tho effort. Ho takes the fences in bis stride and is looking and moving very well.

Kaika (McSweeney) provided the antithesis of Tigerland’s display. McSweeney got him over the first fence after he had twice run off, and he ran off at the next, the post and rails. On a second attempt he propped, but made a last-moment decision and took a standing jump, with tho result that he pub his feet through the fence and was with difficulty extricated without mishap.

Scion and a companion did long, strong work on the tan. Scion is in good nick. Quest and En Route went down to the seven-furlong post together, and were evidently intended to have a spin, but Quest was lively and anxious to bo off, and, his trainer being engaged in assisting to get Kaika ou+ of the fence, 1 he went away alone and did a circuit at a strong pace. En Route followed at a considerable distance.

After breakfast Backsheesh and Deroulede wont once round. Deroulede showing to most advantage.

Roseday. looking bright and weP after his Auckland victory, did steady pacing.

Royal Blood, Joy Ride, Kahikatea, and several others did easy work. Sunday, April 8. It rained hard on Saturday night, and it was cold and bleak and raining when the horses went out yesterday The new grass and sand tracks were open, tho former being most used. No fast or interesting work was accomplished, and the tracks were very heavy. 5 Jefferd’s team did solid work. -

Cheer Up is evidently suited for the heavy going, as he revelled in his work. Another that went well in it was Dainty Step. The black mare looks well.

Royal Blood was to have had a spin with Joy Ride and Kahikatea had it been fine, but they were restricted to steady pacing.

Sunart, Mireusonta, and Kick Off were also worked. Mireusonta was ridden, and favoured his bad joint more than he did on Saturday.

Race Visitors: When in Willi s Street don’t fail to pay. the welhknown Sports’ Store a visit. Herb Price’s. — Advt. (Ry Glencoe.) Surveyor continues on his winning way, and the latest success to fall to him was the. autumn handicap at Avondale. Ho would be at a disadvantage at Ellerslie last week, as the downhill track would not suit him with his doubtful joints. The present owner of Surveyor, Mr. J. Paterson, was always known as a wonder with horses that had doubtful-looking joints. Liffey, by Bonifonn and Millimetre by Solferino', alre two very useful ponies that may shortly be sold fol the pony ranks in Sydney. Both have showed pace in their races, and as they are eligible for 14.2 certificates* they should find a ready sale in Sydney. The Australian-bred Alfort ran another second at Avondale on Saturday, and it seems to be a hard job lot his owner to pick up a race. No matter whether the company is weak or strong, tho Fortafix gelding seems to be unable to do better than fill minor places. He is now starting to get a bit thick in the wind, and may have to be operated on. While in Auckland last week Mr. D. Donald purchased tho four-year-old brown mare Tinorahi, by Lord Multifid from a St. Crispin mare. She has joined the team controlled by J. Coyle. When ho fell in the steeplechas at Ellerslie To Maire injured one of his shoulders, and he may require a spell before he can race again. Those who saw Explorer win over the steeplechase course at Ellerslie say there is a good future for tho Kenilworth gelding in cross-country races. He was early in charge, and gave a faultless exhibition of fencing. At present ho is light in condition, but with judicious handling he should be able to be kept going throughout tho season.

To celebrate.tho win of Queen March in tiro Champagne Stakes at the Auckland. meeting, Mr. Eliot Davis entertained his trainer, Fred Davis, and his friends at a dinner Inst Thursday at tho Royal Hotel, Auckland.

Tho Taranaki representative, Income, who is to run in the Thompson Handicap, is a good performer in heavy going, and at Ellerslie last week he was one of the leading division over tho first part of tho Easter Handicap. The Riccarton-trained Boadicea is to bo a runner in tho big mile at Trentham, but so far her owner has been unable to get a rider for tho • chestnut mare.

Tho ex-Now Zealand hurdle horseman, F. Gray, and the well-known trainer, N. D. Godby, struck trouble at Caulfield last month over the running of tlie hurdle horse Rahda, and were disqualified for twelve months. Notice of anneal has been given. After the trouble the hurdle horses trained by Godby were handed to Stan Reid to train.

Trainers and Jockeys when in town: We extend to you an invitation to visit our well-known store for men. Herb Price’s. —Advt.

The attendance on tho concluding day of tho A.J.C. autumn meeting was 40 000. The weather was fine but cloudy, and there was a sharp shower just prior to the last race. Though the programme contained no star events, tho racing proved more enjoyable than that on any of the preceding days, principally on account of tho spectators knowing more about the horses.
