Paris, April 6. Reports in the newspapers indicate that the revolutionary movement in Russia is intimately connected with Trotsky’s illness. It is alleged that an attempt has been made to infect the Soviet leaders with disease germs by means of contaminated food, and it is alleged that Trotsky is thus suffering from cancer of the stomach, while Stockholm advices assert that Tchitcherin’s indisposition is developing into a serious malady, and that Litvinoffi is now in charge of foreign affairs. Wholesale arrests are taking place in Moscow, and many people, have been deported to Siberia, while a number of officers have been shot in Petrograd for treason- Serious disturbances are anticipated in the event of Lenin’s death, and a number of hostages are held, who will be executed if disturbances arise.—Aus.N.Z. CONFLICTS IN UKRAINE BETWEEN RED TROOPS AND PEASANTS Berlin, April 6., There have been serious conflicts in the Ukraine between Bolshevik troops and the peasants. The Bolsheviks suppressed the revolt with great bloodshed, and executed 340 peasants apparently because they protested against the trial of the Patriarch Tikhon. Anti-Jewish pogroms in the Ukraine are also reported, and numerous Jewish families are fleeing to Poland.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
RED ARMY OFFICERS ARRESTED Constantinople, April 5. It is reported from Tiflis that the C-omniander-in-Chieif, General Egroff, the Chief of Staff, General Pougatgheff, and several Staff officers of the Red Army in the Caucasus, have been arrested on charges of conspiring against «the Bolshevik authorities. — Aus.-N.Z- Cable Assn.
PRAYERS FOR LENIN’S RECOVERY, TROTSKY’S REGIME FEARED (Rec. April 8, 11.40 p.m.) London, April 8. The Moscow correspondent of the “Sunday Express” states that all Russia is praying for Lenin’s recovery. Communists revere him as their leader, and the bourgeoisie do not want him to die because they fear Trotsky’s regime will mean a sharp turn to the left. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
EXECUTION OF BUDKEVITCH Warsaw, April 6. A huge meeting of protest against the execution of the Polish prefete Budevitch m Moscow was held here. A hundred thousand people marched to the British Legation and cried: “Long live England!” A deputation requested the Premier to intervene energetically on behalf of the imprisoned Catholic priests. Access to the Russian and Ukrainian Legations was barred by the police, owing to the possibility of disturbances. —Reuter.
