TROUBLE WITH MAORIS
A CONSTABLE ASSAULTED. BY TELEGRAPH.—PBB3S ASSOCIATION. ' Te Kuiti, April 5. About 10.45 p.m. on Easter Saturday Constable J. Dawson endeavoured to quieten three Maoris, who were behaving in an objectionable manner in tho main street ,apparently under tho influence of liquor. As he turned to walk away, one of the Natives jumped on him and bore him to tho ground, and it is alleged that tho other two Natives assaulted him with sonic violence while he was down. Constable Dawson was picked up unconscious an hour later. It was tound that his injuries were not so serious as was at first supposed. They wore confined to his face and head.
A Native named Puku Wi was arrested on Tuesday and charged with assault. He was remanded to Auckland to appear in seven days. Two other Natives were arrested this morning, but released, as Constable Dawson could not identify them. Constable Dawson has recovered and resumed duty.
