merce Annual Conference, the Federal Prime Minister (Mr. S. Bruce) said that if he went to London as Australia’s representative on Imperial and economic conferences, he would talk frankly, to English statesmen on the unreasonable inequalities of trade between Australia and Britain. He referred particularly to the Australian meat industry and' 1 the danger of its total disappearance. He added: “Nothing is being done to help us to preserve this great industry. London shops are stocked with* Argentine meat, while Australia is unable to get a footing in tho market.” Mr. Bruce quoted figures showing that in 1920-21 Australia gave trade preference to Britain of £8,750,600, while Britain’s preference to Austiaba in the same year, was to the extent of merely £45,000. The president, in opening the conference, said that the commercial outlook had improved on that of last year, but he stressed the effect of the conditions in Central Europe on Australia, adding that until peace was restored there and industries set going agstin ib would be impossible for Australia io put herself lon a really sound basis, as many markets which were available to her before tho war were not available r ow. —Press Assn.
